What's the craziest Anti-Catholic whopper you've ever heard?

One of my fledgling Baptist convert friends told me he had heard “Catholics are only allowed to pray to the Pope”. :rolleyes: Not that he believed it himself, but just the fact he had heard it made me LOL.

Also this one pothead roommate I had once said the Vatican was keeping some of the Dead Sea Scrolls hidden away to keep them a secret. Of course, he also thought Vatican City was located on an island somewhere… 🤷
 
I think that the most important wooper i heard
is concerning The Holy Family: The Virgin and St. Joseph
who lived an ordinary marital life and
got more children as brothers of Jesus who is a prophet
and not the Son Of God. This resemble to the muslims
beleive who consider Jesus as a prophet but venerate
a lot his Mother , even more than Mohammed mother,
and consider her as a highly blessed Woman of God.
When it is an apolegetic wooper , it is serious to
consider and try to convince the contrary.

I had a co-worker who told me Catholics weren’t Christian.

My reply? Dude, we are the* ORIGINAL *Christians!

So true! One of they things I try to teach my ccd kids is when anyone asks if they are christian the answer is NOT no I’m Catholic.

The answer is yes. Or yes I am Catholic.

Sadly many Catholics when asked if they are Christian say no, I am Catholic. Is it any wonder others would say the same?

This reply to the question truly surprised me.
The first time I hear about it.
Why on earth do they say no? What is the historical
traditon behind it?. I really wish to know.:confused:

Back when I was still Protestant, I attended this one Calvinist church. Before the service began, they played a video in order to raise money for a missionary they were sending to Italy. Italy desperately needed a missionary, they claimed, because it’s 90% Catholic, and therefore “the kingdom of the devil”.

Ironically, that comment is what started me on my journey to Catholicism.

To a lot of people, “Christian” is synonymous with “Protestant”. They say that they aren’t Christian, but they really mean that they aren’t Protestant.
 
I hate it when non-Catholics call the Church a “cult”. Yeah, sure. The One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church is a cult. FYI Jesus said that He was founding a Church that the gates of Hell would never prevail over, not write a book about it.😃
 
Some Catholics here say that if you’re not Catholic, you’re going to hell, but that actually frighten me and shatter my belief. As I grow up I have seen lots and lots of people devote themselves to Christ, they love God, and they truly have faith in Him, who is our eternal Savior. I also have seen lots of Catholics that lack faith, who follow worldly temptations, whose desire to go church is somehow purge their sins and/or appear to be the righteous, most of their confessions only to get somekind of “sin-forgiveness formula” like how many “Our Father” or “Hail Mary” clean away their sins,yet they’re the ones that going to be saved rather than Protestant who had devoted his/her life to Christ and bring people to the Gospel? I’m sorry, I just can’t believe that. Many of my Catholic friends don’t believe that either, most of them believe both Protestants and Catholic are saved since both worship the same God, and the same Savior, they only believe that Protestants are lacking the fullness of Truth and Blessing in their lives.

I want to convert to Catholicism, but if this doctrine is true then it is frightening and it makes me feel like I don’t want to join the Church anymore.
 
I recently came across a teaching from the 7th-day-adventists, who claim that the church is evil because they worship on Sunday. They think we should worship on Saturday since one of the commandments says “Keep the sabbath day holy”. The fact that Catholics are exprected to keep every day holy, and some worship 7 days a week, seems to make no impression on them! :rolleyes:

Because they are kids and don’t know any better.

Maybe a parent has taught them that because as a previous poster said they hear protestant when someone says christian. Not for the most part with the kids I deal with though.

Oh yeah, I know many protestants who are friendly, God-loving people. A lot of them go to a United Methodist “megachurch”, and though the place looks like an amusement park:D, they aren’t hostile to the Catholics at my parish (which is literally just down the street). Now the local Baptists…that’s another story.

I found that a lot of protestant “missionaries” were actually not being aimed at hard targets - Muslims, Pagans, Atheists - but at “sheep-stealing” soft targets such as Catholics. Catholic missionaries on the other hand are the ones who more often try to convert non-Christians. This is true historically also. Until Victorian times protestants rarely had missionaries at all.

On the main issue of whoppers against Catholicism, there are so many…
  • Catholics are anti-women
  • catholics are anti-science and progress
  • Catholics killed x million witches
  • Hitler was a “good Catholic”! pope Pius was his best buddy.
  • Catholics attacked harmless Muslims etc in the crusades.
  • Catholics said you could get to heaven by killing infidels
  • Catholics invented slavery
  • Inquisitions killed Millions (or even tens of thousands)
  • Catholicism causes AIDS
  • Catholics are more likely to be child abusers
  • Catholics rewrote history to hide their crimes/their invention of the bible/the “fact” that Jesus was married etc. etc.
  • Catholicism is a huge conspiracy to dominate the world/oppress women/suppress science/gather enormous riches for priests/eliminate sex/kill African catholics/etc. etc. (pick one or more)

  • Catholics can pay money to have their sins forgiven.
  • The sale of indulgences is a key part of Catholic doctrine
  • Mary is regarded as more important than Jesus
  • Catholics can sin as much as they like, then get forgiven in order to sin again.
  • Catholics aren’t allowed to pray directly to God
  • Catholics need to have a priest intervene for them instead
  • Protestantism equals religious freedom to make your own sense of the bible (Just try it)
  • The Pope can just make anything up and Catholics have got to believe it as dogma.

Yes - I am debating with a Protestant friend in email exchanges and has brought a lot of these false charges up and he is a college educated guy in charge of a whole research department at his work. That is what is scary! The bigotry seems to be a part of some of the fundamentally bible-only Protestant culture and mindset itself and it completely blinds them and makes rational dialog impossible. This kind of obstinate contempt for Catholics exist passively and quietly in high places in the office and work place and such people WILL purposely hold down Catholics from advancing and having influence in the corporate structure. I have heard that there is a lot of it in the military too and many Catholic officers get quietly passed over if they are “too Catholic”. There is nothing more frustrating to me than to try to engage people with these brainwashed minds in rational dialog and ask for evidence or facts to back up the claim and they say things like “Catholics have revised history” or “destroyed evidence” etc. and they just blow you off.

It sounds to me like the followers of the reformers in conjunction with the secular governments must have gone way out of their way to very expertly initiate a smear campaign centuries ago and set in motion polemics to slander and vilify the Church that persist even to this day. But its more than mere ignorance - its evil incarnate trying to hide the truth through calumny and intrigue and physchology. It’s hard to believe that such ignorance can not only exist in this day and age but thrive and replicate itself.
