I tried to start a conversation on CARM forums and I got blasted by ignorant comments from Reformists, Atheists, Fundumentalists, you name it, Has anyone else tried to post on there?

Haha I never have. I heard about it’s reputation and then watched a couple youtube videos by Matt Slick, so I knew in advance to not even bother. Matt just comes off like the type who isn’t interested in actually digesting what the other side has to say, but only in his rather narrow views. Check out this video of a phone “dialogue” between Slick and Dr. Sungenis, a Catholic apologist. It will show you how he got the reputation he has around here. My advice would be to just not bother with that bunch.

I guess NOT! It was simply recommended to me by another person on “Christianforums” as a regular Christian forum… my mistake I guess

Well I can’t speak for Protestants, but I wouldn’t guess that it would appear as offensive/ignorant to non-Catholics as it looks to us.

I see you’re in the process of RCIA. Are you coming into the Church this Easter?

Anti-Catholic bigotry is alive and thriving there. Not an ounce of charity to go around.
Some of the worst on the Catholic forum are actualy the ex-catholics.

I spend some time on the LDS Cult forum to keep my apologetics in shape 😃

Haha I’ve always wondered if even one in twenty-five good posts hits anything but a brick wall in places like that…

I quit posting there a long time ago and encourage other Catholics to boycott them because they are so nasty and so poorly moderated.

It’s not just the members but their mods are just as bad.

One very good reason to boycott them is that their (anti-)Catholic forum is one of their busiest. If we refuse to support them by participation, their visitor base drops and they find themselves talking to themselves.

Our absence sends the message that we do not accept their disrespect, contempt, and gross lack of charity, nor their biased “moderation”. Let that thunderous silence be our voice while we support (in every way) CAF.

In the last analysis, if any of them want the truth…they know where we can be found.

This United Methodist got thrown off of CARM years ago. I never did entirely understand why, other than stating an opinion that the mods disliked.
I have to say, I haven’t missed it even once…

That makes two of us… 😃

I don’t think boycotting them is the best answer

Even though they are rude and sometimes dishonest, shouldn’t lies be met with truth?
What about people sincerely seeking Christ, they can see through the hate and recognize the spirit of charity.

Okay, there is no easy way of saying this.
Avoid places were crazy people hang out.
Its just not bigotry or anti-Catholicism, many of these people are truly insane. Look at how our mods have to constantly be vigilant against trolls with bizarre theories. CARM is a playground for people who really need to be on meds.
Avoid it.

This.

I read a bit of the linked thread. It was the words “magic chairs” that sent me into :ppeals of laughter. Obviously, there are :eek:people over there who ARE on meds. The trouble is, the most popular “meds” seem to be:whistle: hallucinogenic.

Magic chairs???
:mad:I want my own magic chair, dagnabbit!!!:banghead:
And my cat wants two of them.

Other than that:shrug:–Same old, same old.

I realize there may be some here who might view this as uncharitable or not very Christ like, but I really desire a Catholic run forum where anti-Catholics can come and “debate” with the same veracity that they do on CARM, and be dealt with authoritatively in return; 1st with charity, and if the rhetoric calls for it, 2nd with the tenacity of a pit bull. There are some really dynamite Catholic apologists over there, but the biased moderation over there really prevents them from really letting go. A few of the CARMites may show up at CAF, but invariably end up getting permanently banned, with CAF stating that it is not that kind of site. And I understand that.

As to the dilemma whether to ignore them or engage them:

One reason not to is the fact that the site is funded by rotating banner ads. Simply going there will put money in their coffers, albeit probably minimal.

I am guilty as charged. I tell myself often that I need to just sign out and stay out, and my wife tells me that I may as well be arguing with a wall, and she is correct. But…

Once in a blue moon, the following happens:

1st, a meaningful dialogue with an anti-Catholic will occur. Very rare, but very worth it. I consider it as a seed planted.

2nd, in the last year that I have been there, the lines have been sharply drawn, no Catholic mind has been changed, and no fundie-charismaniac-evangelical mind has been changed. Not a one. Every Catholic who has come there is still a Catholic. Occasionally, a lurker will drop in to observe. Some of them perceive they are being called to become Catholic, like myself. Some of them are curious about Catholic teachings and doctrine, like myself. Some just want to see what all the fuss is about. Some are cradle Catholics who have lapsed and are thinking about “coming home”. Without fail, and I mean 100% without fail, every single one of the lurkers who drop in are DISGUSTED with the tenor, tone, and behavior of the fundie-charismaniac-evangelicals there. There are testimonies at both Steve Ray’s site and at CAF of lapsed Catholics who came back to the Church and of converts entering the Church -after- spending some time at CARM and observing the difference in behavior between the fundie-charismaniac-evangelicals and the Catholics. You are reading the words of one such person.

I believe their words are only hurting themselves. I believe that it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to do harm to the Church with their words. This Church that I have committed my whole being to, Jesus promised us that the gates of hell will not prevail against it, and I believe that. If I did not, then I would have simply told our Lord, “Thanks, but no thanks. See ya…I’m off to do my own thing.” Being persecuted by their words is like being stoned with cotton balls. And to the observer, the very words that those fundie-charismaniac-evangelicals intend to tear down the Church are in fact building up the Church. I have seen it with my own eyes, starting with myself. If you keep pointing them back to the scripture, back to the facts, back to the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world, they WILL start to flubber.

Reading through some of the threads in their ‘Catholicism’ section is just… concerning to say the least.

So far I have read “Catholics like to pride themselves on the traditions of men…” and “Indulgences were made up to make money”…

I’ve popped in and out of CARM over the years, and it never really changes.

What has apparently changed is the fact they are allowing Catholic posters. At one point in somewhat recent history, if you listed yourself as Catholic during the registration process, you were prevented from registering.

I guess their bashing wasn’t complete without any Catholic posters.

Their mods tend to jump on the bandwagon alot, and tend to be more vile and vicious than the everyday poster.

The ones who “claim” they were Catholics at one time are the ones that make me giggle though. Either they were never Catholic to begin with, and are using that to bolster their outlandish claims, or they were so poorly catechized, that they are speaking from a position of pure ignorance.

It really is sad no matter which way you look at it.

Would stay away from there altogether. I posted there for a while. Mainly its just the same people posting the same words over and over and over again. Total waste of time.

Lots of posters wearing tinfoil hats overe there too.

Peace,
