What's the deal with CARM

I quit posting there a long time ago and encourage other Catholics to boycott them because they are so nasty and so poorly moderated.

It’s not just the members but their mods are just as bad.

One very good reason to boycott them is that their (anti-)Catholic forum is one of their busiest. If we refuse to support them by participation, their visitor base drops and they find themselves talking to themselves.

Our absence sends the message that we do not accept their disrespect, contempt, and gross lack of charity, nor their biased “moderation”. Let that thunderous silence be our voice while we support (in every way) CAF.

In the last analysis, if any of them want the truth…they know where we can be found.
Ditto. I spent some time there years ago. It’s not a healthy place for any Christian (Catholic or non-Catholic) to be.

Peace,
Robert

Okay, there is no easy way of saying this.
Avoid places were crazy people hang out.
Its just not bigotry or anti-Catholicism, many of these people are truly insane. Look at how our mods have to constantly be vigilant against trolls with bizarre theories. CARM is a playground for people who really need to be on meds.
Avoid it.
Just checked out the response in the link above, and now I feel like I have to go wash my hands. The vitriol is truly breathtaking at that site. Why didn’t I listen to my own advice and just leave it alone… :banghead:

Peace,
Robert

Ok found this thread and wanted to check out. I, of course, had to go read some on CARM to have a bit of understanding. Can anyone tell me what the poster meant by “magic chair”. I just don’t get that one.🤷

Was he referring to St. Peter’s chair? I’m not sure what is ‘magic’ about it.
Like I said in an earlier post, a lot of these people are at least on sandwich shy of a picnic.

Well I can’t speak for Protestants, but I wouldn’t guess that it would appear as offensive/ignorant to non-Catholics as it looks to us.
I just went and checked it out and spent about 45 minutes reading over it. It all seems rather silly to this Protestant. Of course, remember that as far as fundamentalists go, Episcopalian is synonymous with Catholic and they’re anti both of us.

When I was a fundamentalist I was told Episcopals were going to Hell because they retained all the ‘pagan’ elements of Rome. Of course, their world is very, very small. Only room for themselves.

Haha! You’re right; I was told similar things in the Pentecostal church of my youth - “Catholics with vocal training,” as our minister would call them.

And, in an effort not to derail this thread completely, I will say at first glance CARM seems very egalitarian with forums for each major denomination of Christianity. However, after you scroll down, one notices that Mormons are lumped in under the “Cults” section along with Freemasonry. I wonder how Mormons feel about that, or Freemasons, for that matter?

I think it is poking fun at papal infallability “ex cathedra” [from the chair].

If you go by the dictionary definition, all religions can be called CULTS
If you go by CARM, it’s whomever is really different from them. You’ll see the insult “cult” thrown at Catholics quite a bit, as well. Posting on CARM taught me quite a bit.

I tried to start a conversation on CARM forums and I got blasted by ignorant comments from Reformists, Atheists, Fundumentalists, you name it, Has anyone else tried to post on there?
No, but I did read there occasionally. Naturally, I go to the Catholic section. I found that they were misrepresenting the Catholic facts SO terribly. I went to the forum rules and regulations (or whatever it was called). It said that any user who misrepresents the moderating beliefs will be banned. So, you can’t misrepresent their beliefs, but they can misrepresent yours.

I stopped reading because of that.

This is how much they love everybody:

• Atheists/Agnostics should email carmdiane@yahoo or send alert to mods requesting membership title to atheism forums. Atheists: Atheists are restricted to the Skeptic Tank room in chat. They are allowed to enter the Christian room only when entering the chat, but they must immediately go to the Skeptic Tank room.

“Skeptic Tank”? Seriously? That is absurd. I couldn’t stand reading the forum rules, much less what lies they put about the Church.

I see you’re in the process of RCIA. Are you coming into the Church this Easter?
Oh, yes it does! CARM is a particular type of Protestant, an arrogant and judgmental type that thinks they have all the answers and everybody who disagrees is just flat wrong and has no right to speak. To most Protestants who aren’t of that ilk, it’s just as offensive and ignorant as it is to Catholics. Really, don’t bother with them. :twocents:

Well I’m glad to hear that many of our Christian brothers and sisters also object strongly to the CARM silliness. I’ve never quite understood the hateful minority who think the loving majority are all doomed for hell, but I don’t plan on ever actually understanding that line of thought either…

I went to go read over there and it doesn’t bother me much at all. I likely wont participate there, because I want a Catholic community, not a debate club. But given the debates I’ve been through in my time, I could probably kick some butt over there. I do find this one quote hilarious:
…My experience with CA suggests that those who are low on style and substance points sometimes have to find a new home, not because they disagreed (which, after all, is the point of having a discussion forum - so those who share differing views can offer their opinions and substantiations in an atmosphere of mutual respect and ecumenical brotherhood)…
…I find that if one lacks style and substance, this appears to be the perfect home…so welcome home, my pilgrim children…
😛

I will say I wish there was a bit more leniency. I will never forget inviting my then Baptist boyfriend over here. He got banned rather quickly and I’m still not sure why. I wanted him here so that he could hopefully absorb what we have to say and hopefully become Catholic someday. And he didn’t feel bad about the ban at all. He felt victorious. He felt like we were intimidated by his arguments and he won. So now he’s my Baprist ex now. 😛 Just saying, as much as I’d like a peacful community here, I want us to have the chance to save souls too.

OK, I’m coming late to the party, but what’s CARM?

Well iloveangels, it says Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry. I have been reading a bit on the Catholic forums today and I would say it is more of a Catholic bashing forum. Most of the posts are very judgemental and the people of protestant faiths ban together and bash any Catholics that may post there. I did read quite a bit of the thread “Banned from CA”. Most of the posters stated they did nothing wrong and followed the rules but got banned from here anyway. It truly makes you sad to read some of them. At least here, the discussion, while may get in depth, it is respectful. There it is nothing more than a bunch of name calling and extreme rudeness. It is not something that really produces anything of worth.

I think you are describing the Calvinists, at least they are the worst I’ve seen.
