What's the difference between a Catholic and a Christian?

In spite of being a Catholic, I do not understand the distinction between being a Catholic and being a Christian.
 
A Catholic is a Christian who is a member of the Church founded by Christ upon St. Peter and governed by St. Peter’s successor, the Pope.
