What's the difference between a Grave Matter & Mortal Sin?

I have heard the term “grave matter” used when referring to Catholics using contraception. My question isn’t to do with contraception but what is the meaning of “grave matter.” If “grave matter” refers to mortal sin than why use a term that may lead Catholics to believe that what they are doing is less than a mortal sin?
