My wife asked me what the difference was there between Protestant and Evangelical and I did not know. Do they have different beliefs?

At the risk of flippancy, a general rule of thumb is that all Evangelicals are Protestants but not all Protestants are Evangelicals. Evangelicalism is a movement within Protestantism that developed over the last century or so, and encompasses a wide range of beliefs on a spectrum from fundamentalist to liberal. Non-Evangelical Protestants are usually those who belong to the high-church, mainline sects, although some of those sects do have Evangelical “wings.”
