Good morning.

It appears that pretty much all churches in my area offer the mass on Holy Thursday at 7 pm… However I need to attend mass at some other time… So I found a Church (also a catholic school) in my area that has this schedule for tomorrow:

9 am Liturgy (school)
7 pm Celebration of the Lord’s supper and washing of the feet.

What’s the difference?

Thank you.

God bless you.

It could be Morning Prayer (from the Liturgy of the Hours). On Holy Thursday, Mass is forbidden outside of the Chrism Mass (usually held in the Cathedral) and the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

+1. There is no Mass on HT other than the one in the evening with the washed feet; and none on Good Friday at all.

However, neither is a day of obligation.

Right. You’d have to ask them what they mean by “liturgy”. Is it Liturgy of the Hours? Are they offering a Communion service?

Usually, “Liturgy” refers to the Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Catholic Church. At the time mentioned, they’re probably doing the Invitatory, the Office of Readings, and Morning Prayer – but could just be Morning Prayer.

As for the 7 PM: the most likely scenario is that it will be the Mass of the Lord’s Supper for Holy Thursday.

Sometimes people try to get creative in bulletins and other announcements. That’s unfortunate because it causes confusion.

As for the morning Mass, the Missal does allow for the possibility of a morning Mass, but only with the permission of the Ordinary and only in great necessity (I don’t know if that applies to the school).

Liturgy simply means the public work [and or duty] of the Church … thus many offerings are rightly considered liturgies. Liturgy comes from the Greek - leitourgia

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass AKA Liturgy of the Mass is comprised of two liturgies - The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

The Liturgy of the Hours is comprised of many liturgies - each one can stand independently [the major hours: Morning Prayer, Mid-day Pray, Evening Prayer, Night Prayer - and other hours as well] when prayed consecutively are the Liturgy of the Hours.

A Vigil Service is a liturgy as is the Committal Service at the graveside.
