The Church tells us that Holy Saturday -evening – is the holiest time on the Christian Calendar. Everything springs from that night…

Among other things, the Easter Vigil liturgy is when we:
  • retell (in excerpt) all of salvation history, from the Creation, the promise to Abraham, the Exodus, the turning away of Israel, and God’s promise of a new covenant, to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • initiate new (adult) members into the church through Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion.
  • renew our own baptismal promises
so yes, it’s a very holy night indeed!

The Feast of the Annunciation will be celebrated on April 4 this year because it fell on Good Friday. Good Friday liturgy takes precedence because it being part of the Easter Triduum. Now, since the Annuciation is high ranking on the calendar, it is transfered to the next available day outside the Easter Octave which in this case is Monday, April 4th.
Exactly right. Because the Triduum is never overriden by anything else, not even the solemnity of Christ’s Incarnation (the Annunciation).

It would also help to remember that the Evening Mass of Holy Thursday, the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil are not three, but ONE liturgy, hence the Triduum is ONE big celebration bumping off all others, and is therefore the holiest of all the days of the year. Not just Thursday, Friday, or Sunday, but all of these together.

Easter for sure…though if I wanted to be cynical, then I would say that President’s Day is either the holiest or the most evil day of the year (depending on which side you ride, I’m moderate so it’s neutral for me 😛 )

On this website, I was told that it’s because Christ’s death was “more important,” as it reconciled us to God, whereas the resurrection ‘merely’ proved that Jesus is God.
Whoever said that has a warped understanding of the Christian Faith. If that were really Catholic teaching (I’m pretty confident it’s not), it would justify what I always thought was a particularly silly Protestant objection to the crucifix.

You can’t separate Cross and Resurrection. But assuredly the Resurrection was an integral part of Christ’s saving work. Christ reconciled us to God by overcoming death, by rising from the dead and taking our human nature with Him. To say otherwise is to mutilate the Faith.

In Christ,

Edwin

CHRISTOS VOSKRES!!

ONLY IN THE WEST!

The Eastern Church celebrated the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25th! It is a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Eastern Church. We had combined Divine Liturgy and Entombment Vespers with veneration of the Plaschanitza.

Since the West has moved it to April 4th, this means they will be celebrating Christmas on January 4th 2006 RIGHT???

I always thought that Easter was the holiest day of the year. Then I got to thinking: at Mass, we “proclaim your death, Lord Jesus”, not “your resurrection.” On this website, I was told that it’s because Christ’s death was “more important,” as it reconciled us to God, whereas the resurrection ‘merely’ proved that Jesus is God. So then would Good Friday, the day when Jesus died, be considered the holiest day of the year?
I think Good Friday is the Holiest. Easter is the happiest.

Hi Everyone,

The post on baptism was inserted here by mistake. Sorry.

I thought that Easter was the holiest day of the year… but maybe since the tridium is aboutthe most important part of the human existance, maybe collectively they are the most important!

God Bless–JMJ

One of the Eucharistic prayers is, “Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory.”

Without the resurrection, the passion would mean nothing, and the incarnation(I am including the conception and birth of Christ) would mean nothing.

I haven’t voted yet, but IF it wasn’t due to the fact that Jesus CAME to earth, He couldn’t have the Easter Tridium (sp).
Yes, but the reason Christ came was for the passion. The passion and resurrection are the climax of the life of Christ. Christ came to save the world from death, his birth did not accomplish that. Without the resurrection it would all be insignificant.
