What's the right age for female sexualization?

I misunderstood sexualization. I take back the 15-17 years I posted.

My daughter will Never be sexualized. She’s going to be a nun when she grows up…really… Just ask her daddy …I’ll tell you. :byzsoc:

I’m scared. Boys are hard enough. My oldest has such trained eyes, he’s like his daddy. The second is still young and oblivious. Just tonight he asked mom why her belly was so big. [wasn’t her belly] He’s 6. Very cute and inocent. That’s the way I try to keep them. Girls are different if what everyone says is true. I’m praying for divine guidance on her. She’s already caught on the the princes routine, playing dress up. She’s a girly girl. I fear our neighbors influence though, many of them Methodist and other protestant faiths that get into the popular thing, self-promotion…prosperity theology types. They are not as inhibited as we tend to be.

Go thee to a nunnery…that’s my prayer. Hopefully, with God’s graces we’ll reach her before our corrupt society does. Send her to a Catholic University to find a good orthodox Catholic man. But she’s only 3, and we’ll just deal with that when we get to it.

I bet puzzleannie is a female.

Asillia:

“Sexualization in itself is (I think) not a bad thing; since we ARE sexual beings - so there is nothing wrong with recognizing and embracing that.”

I bet Asillia is a female.

redpepper:

“Sexualization” is always wrong.

I bet redpepper is male.

Interesting. Same exact words. All thoughts from conservatives Catholics. Completely different conclusions, probably based on the sex of the commenter.

Something else is at work here. Mostly likely, behavioral biology.

No wonder there is a never-ending “battle of the sexes.”
I do not think you (and some other posters) understand what sexualization means. The APA defines sexualization as “occurring when a person’s value comes only from her/his sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics, and when a person is sexually objectified, e.g., made into a thing for another’s sexual use.” It is a common courtesy to know how to use international words correctly.
Btw., as far as I know I have never been a man.😛

My understanding and use of the word “sexualization” is pretty much as used by puzzleannie in her second definition:

“if you mean dress, make-up, speak and move like a hottie to catch a man’s eye, that should wait until she is ready to handle a hottie, by marrying him and raising a family with him.”

and in this thread:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=139289

I just find it odd that some Catholic parents say “Girls are becoming sexualized at too early of an age…”, as if there is an age at which time it is OK.

Perhaps I’m using an inappropriate definition myself.

But, I still think some evolutionary behavioral biology is being observed here. As described in the book “The Selfish Gene”

Catholicism “modfies” our biology, but the biological forces are still there and deep-seated.

I think some’s view that there is indeed an appropriate time for sexualization, is that deep-seated biology surfacing.

redpepper:

LOL, sorry, I’ve always been a bad guesser.

Do you have a link to the APA definition you gave? I’m surprised the word “only” is in there.

Puzzleannie was being flippant. I have been on these forums long enough to know that she doesn’t think that women should be viewed only as sexual objects by guys, even their hubbies. 🙂

There is a difference between being sexualized and the fact that we are sexual beings. God did give us the wonderful gift of sex(thank you God for not making us reproduce like amoebas:p )But Catholics believe that we should wait until marriage to have sex.

By the way, what is your own answer to your own question. 🙂

I see many Catholic mothers and fathers complain that the world is sexualizing females at younger and younger ages.

To me, this implies there is an age they feel is proper for females to be “sexualized.”

What is the appropriate age?
I have two daughters and this is only my opinion but the proper, most appropriate age is…

36

😃

I think that sexualization could be used in many different ways and that is probably what is happening on this thread. That isn’t your fault but until everyone agrees on what exactly we all mean then there is probably going to be some confusion.

By red pepper’s definition, no one, male or female should ever be sexualized. But I suspect that some people on this thread thought that you meant when does a young girl hit puberty or when is it okay to have sex.

What attributes define this “hottie” male"?
First, he has to look good in an altar boy outfit. He also has callouses on his knees.

As he gets older, he can swing three toddlers from his arms without breaking a sweat.

He enjoys family prayer and is not afraid of the Easter Vigil.

Now my more serious post.

If we are defining sexualization as the “age of physical, mental, emotional maturity required to birth children including the age at which boys go from being icky to being potential mates” I would say sometime post-puberty. It will vary depending on the circumstances of the young lady. Some are far more mature and have much more life-experience than others.

If we are defining it as the age when low-rise Daisy-Dukes with “JUICY” written across the hiney and thong underwear and skin tight tiny t-s are appropriate–NEVER.

I have been teaching my daughter about modesty all along. These days (she’s 11) when I buy her some nice, modest shorts, she tells me that she wants to wear only dresses.😉

puzzleannie:

“if you mean dress, make-up, speak and move like a hottie to catch a man’s eye, that should wait until she is ready to handle a hottie, by marrying him and raising a family with him.”

So, there does come a time when a Catholic female is supposed to dress, wear make-up, speak and move like a hottie, for the purpose of a catching hottie’s eye? Interesting.

To many orthodox Catholic males, there is never a time for a single orthodox female to have those attributes.

What attributes define this “hottie” male"?
no that time never comes for a Catholic, I am asking what the meaning of “sexualization” is in this discussion, and giving an example of commonly used meaning.

The secular world is screaming out to parents to dress their 8-year-old-daughters like Vegas hookers, and apparently far too many are listening.

It’s the duty of a Catholic parent to explain why that look is wrong, even if it costs the girl her popularity. But I swear, the world is turning wickeder by the second.

puzzleanie:

You certainly did more than give an example of a commonly used meaning of the word “sexualization”. Using the word “should” presents a moral position.

That is, until your Catholic brain overroad you biologically-induced answer.

Could you clarify your answer to puzzleannie?

Her female-wired brain/ nature to suggest there is a proper time to display sexual attractiveness to males.

Its a basic biological behavior for female mammals.
