I love Sherlock Holmes and need some good programming to view as I’m running low on things to watch.

So who comes second to Sherlock Holmes, for great detective stories? I think I’ve seen everyone of Sir Arthur Conon Doyle’s there is to see, but I don’t know the genre too well really. Can anyone advise me on what might be second two or arguably better than Sherlock?

Can everyone give a very small summary please?

(FWIW I really do like the classics but am not rigid about it.)

Poirot. The televised series about Agatha Christie’s famous literary detective. Make sure the lead actor is David Suchet(?)

I’d second Poirot. Agatha Christie crafts those stories well.

Now, if you want a great tongue in cheek one, rent the movie Murder by Death.

i’d advise giving up on it all, Cuz MURDER SHUDN’T BE ENTERTAINMENT
Get it ?? No serial killer / hit person movies

Columbo. If you have Netflix it’s on there.

The basic idea is that most detective stories are “whodunits”. Columbo spins it around by showing you right off the bat who the murderer is and how he or she did it. Instead Columbo has been called a “howcatchem” in that the detective has to prove how the killer did it. I think TV Guide put Det. Columbo in the top ten of their best characters of all time, and for good reason. What he does is be incredibly friendly with the suspected killer and asks him or her to help find the “real killer”. As he goes along he’ll point out pieces of evidence and flaws in the assumed theory on the murder to allow the killer plenty of rope to hang his or herself.

Monk is great. The Finder was good, until the untimely passing of one of the stars. I liked Bones before it jumped the shark. Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch / Martin Freeman) is amazing.

Doc Martin is a medical thing, but it’s semi-detective-y. Except it’s about finding out what’s wrong with people. House is similar but more traditional medical drama-y.

My grandmother loves Blue Bloods. I used to love Rockford Files reruns when I was a kid. But that might be because it had a cheesy 70s theme song.

I am having fun watching “Psych”. A comic detective. Unique, and Amazon has all seven seasons. I get tired of some of the more bloody suspenseful ones. The Brits are good at avoiding that.

Blue Bloods is also good… For a Catholic family, though, they dont go to Mass very much haha

I love Father Brown! A friend of mine told me about it and I was skeptical at first (a predominantly Catholic village in the Cotswolds is like finding a predominantly Anglican village in Tuscany lol) but I’m totally hooked, at least on the new series. I haven’t watched much of the old one.

Another British series…Foyle’s War. Takes place during and a bit after World War II.

I finally broke down and signed up for the Acorn free trial. Brits do it so well. 😉

Columbo is considered one of the best TV series ever made. It was also my father’s favorite TV show.

There is also a Columbo memorial in Budapest and I am already planning a return trip there just to see it.

Yes to Columbo and Monk. Both shows are not gory. Both have very interesting characters that are not your typical detectives. And both have a bit of humor. Our family loved watching Monk.
