I will start with Poirot. I have never read any Agatha Christie, so it would be completely new. It’s not free on Amazon, but I can watch on BritBox for $7 / month. Thanks. I’ll give it a try.

Poirot is very good 🙂
Kingdom is a British one I’m ordering from the library.
Fr Brown I like very much.
Sometimes I enjoy Old Tricks on tv ,it’s English
Psych was good.
Rosemary and Thyme is another I need to order more of.
I guess all the ones I like have a gentle humour throughout .

I just watched all the Doctor Blake mysteries. Set in Australia, very enjoyable. Dr Blake is the police surgeon but keeps sticking his nose into the mysterious murders that the police can’t figure out.

Easy Question:
Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy L Sayers
Ian Carmichael did a PBS series in the nineties that was superb ,
and sometime later , the role was reprised by Edward Petherbridge who was
also brilliant.
You will NOT be disappointed

Dante Torrese , BSI

I second Father Brown, I also enjoyed Phryne Fisher Murder Mysteries. (On Netflix also).
And while theres not a murder to solve every episode, I’m currently enjoying When Calls the Heart.

Thank you everyone who has answered so far and will yet answer. I am curious to see if there is anything I will like nearly as much as a good Sherlock Holmes mystery.

Mike from N.J. and Tis Bearself are right on the money. I heartily recommend Columbo. Even watching a rerun where I know what is going to happen, I still laugh and marvel at Peter Falk’s portrayal. And as an added bonus, go to you tube and google Columbo/Peter Falk roasts Frank Sinatra. Watch a Columbo episode or two before watching Falk/Columbo pay tribute to Frank. It is marvelous and very very funny.

I guess I should know this, but we all have our unique tastes, which can’t be accounted for. I watched Columbo as a kid, some. For me, it was okay.

I’m really not a person who goes in for humor on television unless it is quite dark, which isn’t very nice. I think that I like the late Victorian and Eduardian era that Sherlock Holmes mysteries take place in, but I had to think about it a bit to realize it.

I think humor or none or kind is largely a function of our personality type. That is my theory, anyways. But I will give Poirot a try for starters.

Yes I love the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series. Unfortunately I’ve overwatched them. Need a few years more before I can go back. I never tire of Agatha Christie. David Suchet’s Hercule Poirot and Jane Hickson as Miss Marple. You can buy them on DVD and watch them again and again. Excellent productions, great actors, scenery, dialogue, faithful to the books (or so I am told - I haven’t read much Christie myself). Another more obscure one is Maigret with Michael Gambon - again you would have to buy the DVD to find it. Fantastic. Only 12 episodes though. I watch them maybe twice a year. But I believe because of their quailty they are worth it. Another old chestnut is Cadfael - set in a 13th century English monastery. They filmed it in Hungary. Can also be watched repeatedly.

The movies with Robert Downey Jr. playing Sherlock were quite good, I thought. I also enjoyed the BBC “Sherlock” with Benedict Cumberbatch.

Agatha Christie’s Poirot stories are very good to watch

There are also two modern tellings of sherlock that are worth watching
  • Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch
  • Elementary where Lucy Liu plays Dr. Watson
(edit) I posted without reading all the great recommendations above, so I added my like/heart as support for their suggestions.

Sherlock Holmes Younger Smarter Brother by Gene Wilder was a great comedy on the genre.

What do you think about this show Elementary? I watched a dab of it, but not a whole episode

It’s more ‘edgy’ and modern but I liked it.
Sherlock is a recovering addict and Lucy Liu (Dr. Watson) was hired by Dad to be Sherlock’s his live-in sobriety companion. A good set of actors all around.

Law and Order in my opinion is the best crime/police/legal drama on television. It ran for 20 seasons with expert casts and some great theme music! You should definitely watch some of it! DUN DUN. 😉
