What's the story behind Vatican ii?

??? I never heard that one before!
This means that the mass that was revised *after *Vatican II (the “Novus Ordo”) - in other words, the ordinary mass celebrated in most parishes today - was composed and published in Latin. Any official translation used today, whether in English or another language, is just that - a translation from the Latin. And - which comes as a surprise to most people - Latin was always permitted and still is. Oh - the same goes for facing the altar.

I understood ProVobis to be saying that even though the priest is speaking English the Mass is actually being offered in Latin.

I guess one has to be bilingual to understand that better. Or perhaps a mathematician or computer programmer. For example, a computer understands 1’s and 0’s only. So it “hears” through interpretation, 1111, when the number is actually 8. But it’s still 8 as far as everyone else is concerned, no?

Wow! There’s a lot of information here. Thanks guys! I’m a really critical person, and although I often find myself reading some disturbing things, I know the Holy Spirit is guiding me through the lies, and to the truth. This past month I have learned more about my faith than in my whole 23 years of living. Understanding the whole Vatican ii thing seems like one of the last steps in fully knowing, believing, and understanding the Catholic faith. I’m definitely going to try to read all those documents, and maybe even pick up those books.

So from what you guys are saying is that the council was “hijacked by liberals”? So that means there were people trying to destroy the church from the inside? I know it can’t be done, since the Gates of Hell wont prevail. So my understanding is that these infiltrators were taking advantage of the changes for their own purpose by making certain documents ambiguous, and misinterpreting things?

One troubling thing I came across though is Fr. Rama P. Coomaraswamy book “The Destruction of the Christian Tradition” amazon.com/Destruction-Christian-Tradition-Updated-Revised/dp/0941532984

From what I gather, he seems to assert that the new mass has made sacraments including the Eucharist invalid. As well as changing the form for consecrating bishops and clergy to the sense that they aren’t valid priests and bishops.

How does he come to these conclusions? And why is he wrong?

I can accept the argument that “Vatican II was hijacked by liberals” only if that means the implementation of it in many places. By no means would I accept that the council itself was subject to anything unsound.

Please friend, beware of Fr. Rama P. Coomaraswamy, he is openly schismatic (SSPV I believe) and is not in communion with Rome.

Also, I have to admit, I dig Fr. Malachi Martin, especially the thrilling interviews he did on Art Bell–some of the best radio I’ve ever heard. No doubt he was brilliant too, and, FWIW, he did die under mysterious circumstances, but, we must recognize, he had a penchant for sensationalism.

You recieved excellent advice about reading a book on VII earlier on this thread from Father Bart, John W. O’Malley SJ’s - What Happened at Vatican II. I’d humbly advise you to check that out and be very careful of internet resources. And for myself, I would avoid Fisheaters ‘like the pest’, as old Father Martin would say.

And not to hijack, but IMHO, no matter Fr. Martin’s questionable canonical status I believe he died a faithful Catholic and a good man to boot. And if you’re interested on reading up on perspectives about exorcism, he is the man to go to. God bless those loquacious Irish priests!

Actually, the binary number 1111 is 15. 8 would be 1000.🙂

I take it that I understood you correctly when I wrote:

I understand that the official text is in Latin. But the words of the priest are the words that count. If, at the Consecration, the priest takes bread and says, “This symbolizes My Body,” instead of, “This is My Body,” then I am sure you will agree that the Mass is invalid. It doesn’t matter what the official texts say, Latin or English. The priest is the one who is actually saying Mass and his words are the words that matter.

Indeed. In the bull Unam Sanctam Pope Boniface VIII “solemnly” declared in 1302 that it was absolutely necessary to salvation to be subject to the “Roman Pontiff”. The Council of Florence decreed in 1453 that “pagans”, “heretics”, “Jews” and “schismatics”, no matter what their works were, would be consigned to hell if they didn’t enter the Catholic Church before the end of their lives. Yet, as you know, Lumen Gentium says that non-Christians can be and are saved if they are sincere in seeking the truth (which I agree with). This is a problem I have struggled with for some time, and I am curious how you would resolve it.
The council taught that anyone who is saved is saved through the Catholic Church although the might not appear to be members. This perhaps corresponds to the pre-conciliar teaching on baptism of desire.

But really, I have only the vaguest ideas about this. I am waiting for clarification from the Church

So from what you guys are saying is that the council was “hijacked by liberals”?
The council itself was fine. It promulgated no false doctrine. No matter how much some schismatics may claim and try to prove otherwise, you’ll see that they’re simply taking quotes of context, except unlike with Protestants, they’re not doing it with the Bible but with Church documents. Vatican II merely restated and re-emphasised some aspects of the Catholic Faith that were there long before the council ever happened.

Many of the priests and bishops who secretly dissented from the Faith and held heretical views came out of hiding and used the “spirit” of Vatican II to justify their erroneous views. There’s no such thing as the spirit of Vatican II, however. Vatican II permitted no heretical changes.
So my understanding is that these infiltrators were taking advantage of the changes for their own purpose by making certain documents ambiguous, and misinterpreting things?
Try not to get too hung up on this. It can be argued that certain documents were ambiguous, although that wasn’t necessarily intentional, and there was nothing in these documents that was contrary to the Catholic Faith. In most cases, it wasn’t even any possible ambiguities in the conciliar documents that were the problem. Many clergy dissented and disobeyed the literal words of Vatican II and the subsequent Popes outright.
From what I gather, he seems to assert that the new mass has made sacraments including the Eucharist invalid. As well as changing the form for consecrating bishops and clergy to the sense that they aren’t valid priests and bishops.
God would permit no such thing. Be obedient and trust in Divine Providence, and that will save you from believing the words of sensationalists, heretics and schismatics.

Divine Providence means that whatever God permits to happen happens for the good and the salvation of souls, even if we do not see how that may be the case. Remember that God and the Church think in terms of centuries and millennia and not years or decades. If it is God’s Will, He will turn Vatican II into the foundation of a vibrant Catholic Church in the centuries to come, and the troubles of the past decades will be remembered as a trial and a purifying fire that God desired for His Church and His flock. One can speculate that if this fire did not expose the heretics in the Church, they might have quietly suffocated the Church in the decades to come. God knows what He’s doing.

Our concern as laymen is to love God and love our neighbour. We do this through humble obedience, faith and trust. The gates of hell will never prevail against God’s Church, and we can put our full trust in Jesus Christ and His Church. We need not concern ourselves too much because God will never break His promise to keep His Church safe. God will never let us down or let us be led astray.

You’re correct, although I didn’t say it was a binary computer. 😛

A binary computer would hear “8” as “1000,” a ternary computer would hear “8” as “0022,” a quaternary computer as “0020” and so forth. Each “vernacular” hears different things when the 8 information is entered. The point is that “8” (or VIII) is universal, the translations are not.

Putting aside validity and mathematics, the English here is ambiguous as to what “this” refers to. In Latin the Hoc agrees in gender (neuter) with corpus and not panem (“bread”), reflecting the transubstantiation. In English the “this” with the priest holding the Host in front of him could also indicate the “bread” which would more reflect consubstantiation, which is the Lutheran belief.

As far as validity is concerned, there is an interesting twist to translations. For example, if the priest were to say Haec est Caro Mea it probably would be invalid because there is a substantial difference with Hoc est Corpus Meum. But its translation “This is My Flesh” would probably be valid.

Point is, translations can really play havoc with whatever is attempted, especially in theology and politics.

I find it highly unlikely that liberals were trying to destroy the Church. Any liberals that I know wish to help the Church. They just have very different ideas of how to go about this than mine, for example. I think that most of their ideas were wrong and not helpful to the Church. But I believe they were probably well-intentioned.

Liberal theologians were influential at the council and I think they were responsible for introducing a lot of ambiguity. But the majority of Council Fathers were conservative Catholics who would not have agreed to anything blatantly unorthodox. This encourages me to think that it is possible to interpret the documents in a way that is consistent with Sacred Tradition.

I do not see any good basis for claiming that the OF is invalid. Even among trads who would never attend it, it is a minority position to consider it invalid.

I agree with that. What bothered me the most about the New Mass was translating “Mysterium Fidei” as “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.”

What was intended as an acclamation was turned into a proclamation of the mystery of faith. While one can argue that there are many mysteries of faith, the fact is that THE mystery of faith is transubstantiation.

Since the faithful are called upon to proclaim the mystery of faith just at the point in the Mass where transubstantiation has occurred, it was outrageous that none of the responses contained even the slightest allusion to transubstantiation. The most common response – “Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.” – inexcusably ignores the fact that Christ is present here and now on the altar.

I think that Benedict 16 should have turned the tables on the subversives. He should have let the mistranslation remain but changed the response. When the priest says, “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith,” the faithful should be required to recite the following response and no other: “What had been bread is now the body of Christ. What had been wine is now the blood of Christ.”

I’m with you there. Like “Dominus vobiscum,” there is no subjunctive in the Latin. It IS a mystery of faith and the Lord IS with you. (Pan z wami in the Polish) Different theology.

Are you sure you’re an atheist? You sound awfully Catholic and orthodox for an atheist, y’know… 😃

When we say that the Council was hijacked by liberals, we mean that the minority of liberal Bishops present at the council acquired much power and influence, which meant they got to shape the direction of the Council. In the West in 1960, only 30% of Bishops on average wanted liturgical change at the upcoming Second Vatican Council. Less than half of that 30% wanted significant liturgical change, and when I say ‘significant’ I mean, the Gospel or the Collects being read in the vernacular instead of the original Latin. The majority of that 30% only wanted small change, such as a decrease in the required fasting time before Holy Mass. The other 70% either were opposed to it, didn’t really care, or thought that more important issues should be addressed at the Council.

Yes, the documents produced by the Second Vatican Council contained ambiguities, and Liberals exploited this by mis-interpretation. Some argue that the documents, especially “Dignitatis Humanae” on religious liberty, are outright wrong - the SSPX for example.

Don’t read that rubbish. It’s bad for your soul. Those schismatic sedevacantists are not in Communion with the Church. If you want reading material about the Second Vatican Council, then I recommend the following:
  • “Cranmer’s Godly Order: The Destruction of Catholicism Through Liturgical Change (Liturgical Revolution)” by Michael Davies
  • “Pope John’s Council” by Michael Davies
  • “Pope Paul’s New Mass” by Michael Davies
  • “Liturgical Shipwreck - 25 Years of the New Mass” by Michael Davies
  • “Archbishop Lefebvre & Religious Liberty (Roman Catholic)” by Michael Davies
  • “The Catholic Sanctuary and the Second Vatican Council” by Michael Davies
  • Fr. Ralph Wiltgen’s “The Rhine Flows into the Tiber”
  • “Iota Unum: A Study of Changes in the Catholic Church in the Twentieth Century” by Romano Amerio
Good luck and God Bless.

What is everyone’s opinions on Michael Voris’s Weapons of MASS Destruction documentary? He had some relatively interesting things to say regarding this subject.

Very good video. The liberals don’t like it though.

You are correct. Only schismatic sedevacantists think that it is invalid.

I sometimes hear Vatican ii brought up, and I don’t know what it means. from what little research I can find is that the church went through some changes. However, all of my research leads to saying that Vatican ii was a bad thing, and the church is in heresy now. I am always led to websites that say how the Catholic church has been corrupted by Vatican ii.

So my questions are.

What was Vatican ii?

Why was it needed?

Why do people hate it so much?
Yes, the Church went through some changes, but that’s really neither here nor there. The Church cannot ever be in heresy, or she would cease to be the Church. There are extremists who hate the Second Vatican Council, but there are extremists who hate the Council of Trent… sigh how foolish.

So in response to your questions:

The Second Vatican Council is a legitimate Roman Catholic council just like the Council of Jerusalem, Council of Ephesus, Council of Chalcedon, Council of Trent, et al. The pastoral nature of the Council does not give it any less weight, there just weren’t any new doctrines to define, but if the Holy Father thought that the Church needed some changes, then maybe she did, maybe she didn’t, there’s still fruit to be gained regardless of what the enemies of our religion say.

Why was the Council needed? Your guess is as good as mine, but what is more important is that we respect its dignity and solemnity as it is a work of the Holy Ghost, our Lord and our God.

Why do people hate it so much? Various reasons: It’s too Protestant. It took away the true Mass. It changed Catholic doctrine. It destroyed vocations. It ruined the Church. Although you could choose to see it that way if you want to, that’s not the way any Catholic should look at it. It can’t be Protestant because it’s a Roman Catholic council. The Mass was never taken away, the ritual was changed (and the Extraordinary Form is once again available and will spread in the years to come). There could be multiple factors as to why seminaries and convents are empty (maybe poor leadership and lack of role models which is not inherently a problem of the holy Council). The Church is not ruined as the number of posters here who profess and believe the Faith of the Apostles can testify.

Maybe instead of reading ABOUT the Vatican II, you should just read the documents for yourself 🙂
