Most of the books cited above are written by a schismatic.
From teh Wiki; “He later supported the French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, founder of the Society of St. Pius X, and declined to retract that support after Lefebvre’s decision to consecrate four bishops in 1988 against the wishes of Pope John Paul II”

Certain paints him in a certain light, eh?

Do you guys wish to call the ICRSS priest in Rockford and tell him that the man who was invited to be speaker at several of the seminars and was given awards out there is in this “certain light”?

The rules of this forum prohibit criticizing legitimate rites of the Church, which include the Novus Ordo. Davies wrote that the Novus Ordo was Protestant, whether or not he said it was valid or invalid, and it’s a matter of public record that he publicly supported and adhered to the SSPX.

So…

He may have written books as you say but calling someone a schismatic without a foundation is at best gossip. He wrote one book which put him in disagreement with a couple of the FSSPX priests so…

I listened to two of his talks and had dinner with him. He gave interesting talks on the history of the Church in England. He was also honored by the legitimate TLM community in Rockford, Illinois. I don’t think they would agree with your assessment of the person.

It is by no means gossip! And hardly without a foundation.

The reason I pointed this out is because reading certain of his writings are possibly harmful to the faith of readers of this forum, and other posters who have posted passages from his writing on this forum have had their posts removed and their accounts placed under supervision. I think that’s pretty important.

Just because a group you like or respect hosted him or liked him does not really add much of substance to the discussion, I would like to respectfully offer.

Like I said, it’s a matter of public record. He supported Archbishop Lefevre after the excommunication, and he said the Novus Ordo was riddled with “Protestant” influences like that of Archbishop Cramner, even if he stopped short of calling it invalid.

I can sympathize with his love for Catholic tradition and his frustration at least with the rampant liturgical abuses that followed the introduction of the Novus Ordo, but posting his writings here is in violation of the rules as I understand them and have seen them enforced here.

May God bless us and His Church!

Yes, it’s pretty important to point that out. But you could do that without calling him a schismatic.

I’m not going to defend his positions or his books but the fact that he was invited at least twice by a legitimate TLM community which operated under the careful scrutiny of a very strict bishop as well as some ICRSS superiors has to say something too.

I disagree about the last thing being necessarily the case, but for the sake of harmony, I will say that sure, it’s not necessary to call him a schismatic to make my point. But I stand by what I said about the nature of his writings and their evident inappropriateness/illegality on these forums.

Nothing personal, ProVobis. 😉

Think of it like this:

Vatican II was an attempt to change the way the Church teaches the faith to make it more understandable by the modern man. The Council was hijacked by liberals and many of the documents produced by the council contained ambiguities - which were exploited by mis-interpretation by liberals to push forth their agenda of destruction.

Rome calls for the documents to be interpreted in the light of tradition, not as a break with the past. However, many claim, including the SSPX, that some of the documents are outright wrong - the document ‘DIGNITATIS HUMANAE’ seems irreconcilable with previous Church teaching, for example. For this reason, the SSPX rejects the documents of Vatican II. They accept that it was a valid Ecumenical Council, of course, but they reject the documents promulgated by it.
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Thank you to ProVobis too! Much appreciated. 🙂

I wasn’t the one calling him a schismatic, all I was saying was that he was in favor of flagrant disobedience and the illicit consecration of four Bishops, which I would place on par with a “liberal” Bishop ordaining more “liberal” Bishops (the act of which would cause an uproar on this board, yes?)

And he has said some questionable things, but I totally agree that doesn’t make him a schismatic.

I’m not saying he’s a bad fellow and I’m not saying he’s out to lunch, all I am saying is that what he says should be looked at through a certain lens. Which we should do for everyone.

There’s nothing that Michael Davies has written that would be harmful to the faith. He writes about the crisis in the Church, and the liturgical revolution of the 60s and 70s. Most traditionalists on this forum are banned/suspended almost immediately.
Like I said, it’s a matter of public record. He supported Archbishop Lefevre after the excommunication, and he said the Novus Ordo was riddled with “Protestant” influences like that of Archbishop Cramner, even if he stopped short of calling it invalid.
Whether or not you want to accept it, the Novus Ordo was created by a liberal committee after the Second Vatican Council, headed by Archbishop Bugnini. He offers criticism that is called for. I’m not going to go further into the subject.

We didn’t post his writings here. We gave the names of his books.

God Bless.

I’m not going to go further into the subject because the traditionalist persecutions will begin again.

God Bless.
It’s “without foundation” because some people on here have a different conception than others of what constitutes a schismatic or schismatic groups.

I see an inconsistency between the last two statements. Persecution? By the moderators?

But God bless you, too, and his holy and indefectible Church.

If the ICEL’s Executive Director, Msgr. Andrew Wadsworth, could praise Work of Human Hands of all books, we have nothing to fear from Michael Davies’ writings. They’re really no more incriminating than the RCTV episode on the development on the NO (Weapons of MASS Destruction). 🤷

From the sounds of it, we’re not even supposed to call the Eastern Orthodox schismatic. I’d be careful about throwing that label around. Plus it doesn’t apply to Davies. 😉

Probably more than 99% of Catholics in the U.S. (not including me) have never seen the Novus Ordo celebrated as it was originally written, in Latin, with the priest facing the altar, etc., and without liturgical abuses.

I wonder how much that would change the conversation.

Traditionalists get baited, reported, then the mods come in and ban/suspend them all.

Well, people who follow those who at least until the mid-1960s were part of and in full union with the pope and the entire Roman Catholic Church could certainly avoid giving even the appearance of schism by refraining from criticizing the legitimate judgments of the Roman Pontiff in liturgical matters, and suggesting that Protestant tendencies are present in the Church’s validly promulgated rites. Just a thought. :newidea:

By the way, I have assisted at mass as celebrated according to the Missal of 1962 several times in the past couple of weeks. I love tradition but am not a “traditionalist.” I am a Roman Catholic.

I’d love to dignify you with a reply, detailing why you could still find some of those tendencies in a validly promulgated rite, but it probably wouldn’t stay up long. Perhaps I’m allowed to mention that my approach would be similar to the one found in the Ottaviani Intervention? I’ll cross my fingers…

I think it’s ridiculous that you consider constructively criticizing the Novus Ordo as appearing schismatic, when even the Holy Father Pope Benedict has said:
What happened after the Council was something else entirely: in the place of liturgy as the fruit of development came fabricated liturgy. We abandoned the organic, living process of growth and development over centuries, and replaced it - as in a manufacturing process - with a fabrication, a banal on -the-spot product.
  • then Cardinal Ratzinger

I am very sympathetic to the Ottaviani intervention, which I have read. I love the older form of the mass. Heck, if the Novus Ordo was abolished tomorrow and replaced entirely by the Missal of 1962 at the pope’s order, I would think that was just great.

For heaven’s sakes - and obviously, I can’t and shouldn’t assume (I have no reason) to think that you or others think this here - I’m not here as some kind of Novus Ordo fan. When somebody gets annoyed with the SSPX or whatever, why is that seen as some kind of Novus Ordo promotionalism or “anti-traditionalism”?

But a critical attitude towards the Church’s legitimate actions - what is the point? Sitting in judgment of what the pope approves? A sure road to at least the possibility of some serious dangers, no?
