Don’t know the full story (try looking at an SSPX website) but I’ll tell what I know.
The SSPX was founded in the late 1960’s. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was a retired missionary, he’d just retired ans superior general of the Holy Ghost Fathers (I think). He was very well respected within the church up to that time but was very conservative. In the late 1960’s a lot of very strange were happening in some seminaries and some conservative, traditionally-minded seminarians approached him to support their studies in a traditional manner. The SSPX was formed in 1970 and initially received approval and formed a seminary. (NB I’m trying to stay away from polemics/politice here). But the organisation wasn’t universally popular with the local hierarchy and the Society’s approval became disputed. The SSPX clercy were officially suspended from using their holy orders in 1976 but continued using them. In 1988 Archbishop Lefebvre felt the need to consecrate 4 bishops to continue the work of the SSPX, and the rest is history as they say.

They have a valid but illicit Mass, and its priests have no faculties for the Sacrament of Reconciliation since they are not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Not a good place to be if you are a mortal; end of story, as they say.Anyone know the story behind the SSPX group? . . .
