Well folks I have just found out that our Holy Father Pope Benedict the 16th has changed the stations of the cross.
He has removed the 3 falls of our Lord and when our Lord meets Veronica.
Pardon my ignorance but I dont know what he has replaced them with.
Could you answer my question please…🙂

Actually it was Pope JP II that first “changed” the Stations of the Cross. At one of the Good Friday services he used a Stations of the Cross that was more scriptural in basis then the Traditional Stations of the Cross.

The number of Stations and the stations themselves have changed numerous times over the years. You are free to use the original Stations or the new Stations. There have been several threads on this lately.

Here is a link to the new stations of the cross per the Vatican. I think (I’m only speculating) that they have been changed to make them more accurate to scriptual passages that describe our Lord’s passion. For instance, they have removed the station where Veronica wipes Jesus’ face, and they have inserted Peter’s denial of knowing Jesus.

The website appears to be very well done. And for our Latin lovers, some of the prayers are written in Latin, too.

I shall bring this to my religion teacher when I go back to school.😃

Personally, I like the new ones. 🙂

Are they going to be changed permanently or was this just something Pope Benedict did for this years liturgy?

The Stations of the Cross to the best of my knowledge are not really ‘approved liturgical texts’…they aren’t located in a missal or a sacramentary or a lectionary.

In other words, as a devotional, I suspect anyone could write a group of ‘stations of the cross’ and people could pray those stations.

So JPII did not really ‘change’ the stations…he just used different stations…

There are two primary Liturgies of the Church: the Mass and teh Liturgy of the Hours.

The Stations of the Cross is a devotional. While it had been fairly narrowly defined in the past for many - the stations themselves seemd clearly identified and the prayers the same - history shows that the actual number of stations, and what was represented by any particular station, has changed numerous times throughout the history of the devotion. Becasue it was unchanged, many felt that it was unchangable; and often people thought because it was celibrated so often that it was official (meaning a Liturgical act of the Church).

When one is very familiar with something that is doen in the same pattern time after time, and often with less that a full explanation of it, people often come to believe that it is unchageable. Not so, but a change can be disconcerting.
