When I was in high school, I used to go to our parish’ youth group. Everyone was nice and all- but to be honest, lacked order and thorough explanation of the faith.

After a few weeks I just stopped going (b/c of that reason and other excuses) but still continued going to mass, of course. I still see the youth group leaders at mass but they are so mean! I try to smile at them whenever I see them but they just look away. When the collection plate came around, one of them refused to even look at me!

So what’s up with mean Catholics? Do they honestly think they are going to open non-Catholic’s hearts with that attitude?

God bless!

Do you honestly believe there is something about their Catholicism that causes them to be mean? If so, you have not explained it well. 🤷

I do not believe that they are rude because they’re Catholic- not at all!

I just wonder why they are like that. Shouldn’t they be more Catholic-like? Friendlier? At least smile back?

You are right. If we claim to be Christian or Catholic the Lord requires us to be loving and welcoming. Sometimes it takes time for some people to make their Christian faith authentic in their lives. Some may take their social pretensions into thir faith rather than the gospels. They need prayer.

God bless you and I hope and pray you find enough welcome to reassure you 🙂

A parish I know had to fire their youth leader because she was more concerned about being the youth’s “friend” than another adult to direct them in the faith. That may be why you don’t get a warm smile every now and then. Since you said that there was not much “faith” wise offered in the youth group, my guess is that the leader is not very “faith” informed either. I know many youth leaders who lack SERIOUS knowledge of the Catholic faith and pass on their rebellion to the youth in their groups.

What’s up with mean people? It’s a universal condition, not confined to Catholics.

Why don’t you ask them why they are giving you the cold shoulder if it bothers you? If it’s not worth discussing, then just ignore it. And, perhaps you are just *perceiving *them as being “mean” and they are not in fact being “mean”.

They have been told they have the one true church, and so their pride is puffed up. I’ve encountered such Catholics on this forum in instances where I was actually defending RCC teachings. I argued that politicians who violate RCC teachings in their politics should be excommunicated, only to be told the RCC doesn’t need “outsiders” making such judgments.

You have to remember that non-catholic christians are seen as heritics and phoneys by most of the Catholic population. Some may use the expression ‘seperated brethren’, but many others don’t think that way.

I know in my area, at least, people tend to be a bit more hurried and abrupt and sometimes, downright rude. It’s not just Catholics by any stretch, though many Catholics do act like that.

Meanness in general is a problem, same with pride. We should pray for peace and kindness between all of us.

I know in some cases, we Catholics have gotten a terrible reputation for snobbery. That’s why, in my Catholic group on campus, we try very hard to combat that. Everyone is welcome no matter what, but we still maintain orthodoxy (our chaplaincy is run by Dominicans who are not afraid to defend the Church’s teachings and help us to do the same). Yes, we should speak the Truth, but in love.

Right.

*What’s up with mean Catholics? *Nearly every single person who claims the Catholic faith is a *sinner *-- That’s what’s up.

Church youth group leaders, are people too, everyone has a bitter side and some people are not muture enough to be nice. the best thing for you to do is treat them as best friends say hi shake their hands, beat them with kindness. remember to always be the bigger person no matter what the setting is.

You quit going to youth group because it was not good enough for you, ya think just maybe you offended the people in youth group?

Ditto! :o

That’s true: Just because we are the Church Jesus himself established, doesn’t mean we should get carried away…

… as for the YG leaders, I’ll try to talk to them. Maybe I am interpreting this the wrong way:shrug:

We’ll see what happen 😉

God bless you all!
