I’ve been reading the RSV-2CE Bible online lately, trying to discern if it’s the translation I want. On the whole, I’d say yes. But this stuck out to me as a little odd, and I don’t know why.

Why is it that with certain names and places the word possesses an accent mark/apostrophe/whatever?

E.g., 1 Corinthians 16:1:

“I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deaconness of the Church at Cen’chre-ae…”

It’s not even a thorough breakdown like that used in the King James that actually helps you to pronounce words. It’s just THERE. What is it, anyway?

E.g., again, Genesis 2:11:

“The name of the first is Pi’shon; it is the one which flows around the whole land of Hav’ilah, where there is gold…”

Does anyone else feel emotionally threatened by it?
 
It’s a carryover from the hard copy, which the editors added as an aid for pronunciation, showing which syllable is stressed when you read it out loud. Those marks don’t bother me, I just ignore them for the most part. This is nothing new; I have my father’s old American Standard Bible, copyrighted in 1929, which has those marks along with an explanation found in the preface at the beginning, before the actual Bible text begins.

Where did you find the RSV-2CE on line?
 
From what I understand, the link provided above is not actually the RSV-CE, and… It’s in another post somewhere. I thought the same thing. Well, in any case, that still isn’t the right translation. It’s the second edition we were discussing.

And it’s not laid out easily as are the other editions. I cheated and used google book search. It’s okay if you want to get an idea, but it’s missing pages at times and… Well, here it is:

I actually went with my gut and purchased the NRSV-CE today instead, though. Yes, I know it has inclusive language and translates “almah” correctly (I don’t understand why this is a complaint, to be honest), but it’s regarded as an incredibly accurate translation overall and is very readable and has an awesome format. The pros outweighed the cons, IMHO.

Thanks for the responses, though. I thought they were stress marks. I use my dad’s old KJV when trying to pronounce names. Maybe I should take some Hebrew eventually…

There are no Catholic editions of the RSV available on-line. This has been pointed out on several other threads. See this post. What you are reading on-line is not the RSV-CE or RSV-2CE.
 
Try the one in post 5… That one still worked for me, though this one didn’t.

I am not sure I have ever felt emotionally threatened, or what that means for sure. I assume in this case you mean that you are fearful of having your emotions destabilized by the improper use of an apostrophe, or that not being able to correctly pronounce certain words will cause you emotional distress. Is that correct? Have you discussed this problem with your physician? You should count your blessings. Personally, I am much more worried about real threats like UFOs, alien abductions and the Martian deaconesses who live upstairs and are irradiating me with ultrasonic beams than renegade apostrophes. I am getting a headache from having to wear this pot on my head all the time. Also I have not read the forum rules on sarcasm and I am fearful the mod will send demerits, but sometimes I just lose control and can’t restrain myself. Try ignoring the apostrophes. Seriously, it is not worth the emotional risk. Just don’t let them get to you.

Whoa, not so fast there, grandpa (I’m one myself, so, please, don’t get “emotionally distressed”).

My parish actually had a few of these Martian deaconesses who headed the adult and children’s choirs, and who were more bent on liturgical innovation and cuteness than on implementing the rubrics.

Since I woke up this morning with a headache, it must be that my wife put one on my head - for whatever reason - whilst I slept. I didn’t notice it when I looked in the mirror this morning, nor did my dog look at me strangely, but, since Tylenol doesn’t work, maybe I should go remove this pot from my head. Thanks for the excellent tip! 👍 I’ll let you know how/whether it helped. 😃

Now in the period of a few hours I have encountered two people who feel “emotionally threatened” by apostrophes and the possiblilty they do not know proper pronunciation.
