What's with this hat?

I didn’t notice this until now and have never seen anything like it. It almost looks photoshopped but that is seemingly impossible. My only guess is that the person who holds the position the Cardinal held in the Equestrian Order has a special hat.

Maybe that book “The Church Visible etc.”, which the good Cardinal edited, has some info.

Given the shadow of the mini-biretta on the wall, I agree it’s very unlikely to be shopped. And, like you, I thought presumably it had something to do with the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, but I can’t find anything else like it. Maybe someone gave him a miniature biretta as a gift for some reason, he put it on momentarily to be humorous, and a picture was snapped? I confess, when I first posted this I thought there would be a more interesting explanation than that.

That’s as good an explanation as any, it seems. When I first saw the photo, though, I thought it was a very serious, somber moment, like when he was talking about his illness/resignation…not really a time for humor. But, who knows.
