Boy, does this bring back the memories.
My first wife was a member of the Church of Christ, but a branch that was OK with music in church. She had some friends, however, who attended another branch of the C of C that taught that music in church was sinful. One evening, before we were married, we went to a party at a friend’s house where members of both these churchs were in attendance. Now, these folks all took their religion very seriously, so naturally, the subject of religion came up during the course of the evening. Well, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, fists were (literally!!!) flying. And it wasn’t just two people who got carried away. Half the people there were actually having a physical confrontation about whether or not music was proper in the Church of Christ. What an experience!
Oh, and about their feeling regarding Catholics…when we went to premarital counseling with the minister he said to me, “You’re Catholic, aren’t you?” I replied, “No, I’m Lutheran.” He just rolled his eyes and said, “Same damn difference.”
If I had it to do over again, I would hit the door running and never look back.
