Whats wrong with Mormonism

Perhaps, but you would be standing somewhere…
Yes but it may not be FiJi. The point I’m trying to make is that no amount of evidence or proof on simple things will convince someone so looking for hard evidance on a complex issue of religion is not very effective.

👍 Awesome picture - it really illustrates exactly what an argument about Mormon Doctrine feels like!

“Why me” writes:

“Do you have any proof that Joseph Smith lied about the Book of Mormon and that Brigham Young was in on it? It seems to me that Brigham Young believed in the book and that Joseph Smith gave his life for the work that was started.”

And that makes me feel like “Why me” wants to lure me into that webby cave you’ve pictured.

As for Why-me’s words, I sure don’t want to talk about Joseph Smith lying about the Book of Mormon. Discussion on the Book of Mormon can go to another thread. Its a whole big mess I don’t want to get into, and I am sure has been discussed elsewhere on the forum. Hoo boy. Chariots and Jewish Indians.

But did Joseph Smith lie? Yes. He was quite a liar. And if he could lie to many people in his life, he certainly could have been lying about his religious tales. Was there anything in it for him to keep these religous fables going? Well there sure was. He ensured his positon as the Number One Hero of the Mormon Religion. It was a power positon he used mercilesly to coerce young girls into satisfying his lust. But like any vice there was no end to his thirst.

And as far as Brigham Young believing in Joseph Smith’s book, whatever. Young was also enthralled with Smith’s perverted lifestyle and emulated it. Young “believed” in that, so what else he believed in holds no value to me. They both were sick, sick men. Their chosen lifestyle was disgusting, and it disgusted God.

If it were possibly true that God ever once favored him with revelation - and I do NOT believe that - then* it is* impossible that God would continue to favor him with revelation while his life detoriated into a frenzy of vice.

Just a side note: A business associate and I were talking over the phone and he had me guess his religion. In answer to a question about one minute into the conversation he said “either my religion is true or Catholicism is true.” I said “you’re mormon.”

As most of you know this isn’t just another protestant sect. This isn’t a Christian group as one might think. Either we are correct or they are. They deserve the respect of understanding the conflict much better than most protestants do and for that matter much better than many Catholics do. This conflict isn’t over “separated bretheren” but between truth and falsehood. They are at least honest.

CDL
Do you think its just some (like your associate) that understand the conflict (that its “either us or them”)?

I think there are also those Mormon members who do not think though theology, but instead, accept it as it is fed them, finding the stories interesting, and feeling it is only right to accept the the stories of these kind, smarter teachers on faith. I am thinking of a friend of mine.

Your associate is perhaps too caught up in the tangled web of doctrine. He’s getting lost!

Maybe he should turn his eyes to the sordid life of its founder. And ask how a good God could continue to “confer” with Smith about prophecies and heavenly mysteries while Smith was living a base life of deceit. Would a loving and just God benignly overlook this foulness and consort with him? :nope:

Does this man have a mother, a sister, a daughter? He should read this website: wivesofjosephsmith.org/ It is enough to break anyones heart, the devastation that Smith wrecked. It makes one shudder to imagine facing our just God after a life so foul as Smith’s.

Well of course. It’s all due to conditioning. Go attend any LDS church on the first sunday of the month and they have something called “Fast & Testimony Sacrament Meeting” which essentially is “open-mic night”. Any member of the congregation can go to the pulpit and briefly explain why they are a member of the LDS church and what they love about it. It seems that this serves no other purpose than to boost the morale of the congregation as a whole thus increasing affinity to the “Mormon gospel”.

What I find a little ironic in hindsight (having been raised in a 5th generation LDS family) is that while the LDS chruch looks so unfavorably on Catholics for having “scripted prayers and services”, the LDS themselves during such Fast and Testimony Meetings almost universally include their own unique Mormon Mantras of:

“I know this church is true”
“I know Joseph Smith is a prophet of God”
“I know the Book of Mormon is true scripture”
“I know is called from God”
“I’m thankful for X, Y, and Z facet of the church”.

Like an Amway Convention?

When the mantras are repeated enough its hard to consider there might be a problem with the truth of them. Like “Once saved always saved” or, “Bible Alone”. Its shocking to consider anything else.

And you’re converting after five generations! Wow! You must have some story to tell. When you decide to write it, will you send me a message here and let me know so I can read it?

Welcome to the family, precious one!

Of course I’ll let you know… that is after I come out of the “Catholic Closet” to my family. Culturally speaking, Mormons are much like Jehovah’s Witnesses in their practices of what some would call “disfellowshipping”. Apostasy (leaving the LDS church for another religion) is a big deal to Mormon families and more often than not they just cease from talking to you.

I will keep you in my prayers. I have a lot to pray for right now. You will be on my list.
