Hello,
I am a practicing catholic and fiancé is not. She is not opposed to raising our future children in the church. However, we are getting married outside the church. I was curious, what ramifications does that have on me and on our future children?

Dear friend,

Why would you not first get the necessary information from your own church? It could be possible to marry in a Protestant church with the Catholic Church’s approval. For a Catholic to attempt marriage outside of the Catholic Church without its approval is to render the marriage invalid. This means that every time you have relations you will be committing a mortal sin. In so far as you live in mortal sin, you cannot receive the Eucharist without committing the mortal sin of sacrilege. The Catholic Church takes both Marriage and the Eucharist very seriously.

I strongly encourage you to talk to your parish priest immediately. Friend, you are in our prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
