What's wrong with suggesting a Catholic read Richard Rohr and Paul Knitter on Buddhism?

“Calling himself”?? I thought one of the CAF rules was respect for clergy.
It looked like he is often just using his first and last name. I read the question as possibly related to that, but I can also see how it could be read more negatively.

How do priests decide when publishing books whether to go by Father or not? Maybe it varies. 🤷‍♀️

What credentials do you have to judge heresy?

Do you know what heresy is?

Almost everything I see, whether from him or from the Center, says Father.

I had not heard of him before this thread. My initial searches were showing book covers like this. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

But I also see that my own pastor who most certainly goes by Father (his name) has published 2 books with covers that just say his first and last name.

Maybe you could ask him, then? I have no idea why the difference between book covers and other materials.

FYI, most priests do not have “Father,” referenced on the cover of their books, including Fulton Sheen.

It may have to do with publishing.

That is really a large number of terrible claims, many of which I know to be non factual.
I Made “terrible claims”? Sorry, just my own point of view.
You have got to admit that most conservative Christians and Catholics find it had to recognize his orthodoxy.

Ack, I most certainly never, ever meant any disrespect to a priest. Clearly, I worded that poorly. No, I meant I wondered if he was still a priest, still practicing? Of course I hope he is. I think we should all pray that he remain a priest, and talk to someone about his incorrect ideas! Maybe there is some saintly priest on the forum who could contact him? Please pray for him!

The reason I asked was because he spent some 300 pages spewing the most awful charges against the church. Unending …I can only it loathing. So ugly. Ever read, say, Voltaire, on the church? Very, very painful and wounding to those of us who love the church. He brought me to tears at times.

But of course I simply hope and pray he does not become a full Buddhist and leave the church entirely and I do hope everyone will pray for this.

I wouldn’t even suggest them for someone wanting an unbiased look at Buddhism.

Actually, there have been several threads in the recent past criticizing or warning Catholics against Fr. Rohr’s books, particularly “Universal Christ”. So he is at best a highly controversial author. I myself will not be rushing to read his stuff any time soon.

We have not seen many Rohr threads lately, I believe because the person who used to constantly promote his books here was banned from the forum for violation of TOS.

Here is one such thread I remembered:

Some good Catholic books to read Spirituality
Hello there…Have any of you read Fr. Richard Rohr’s books…The Universal Christ or Imortal Diamond or Falling upwards or The Divine Dance or any books by Cynthia Bourgault??? They both have helped me so much…and NO…they are NOT heretics or heretical…
OP, if you truly do not want Catholics to read books by Rohr or Knitter, it would probably be best if you simply did not mention them unless someone else has already brought them up in the discussion and you are responding to their comment with your warning. As shown by the thread with people announcing they will be sure to go read the books now, posting Internet “warnings” out of the blue about reading material tends to cause people to get curious and run to check out the books. It’s called “the Streisand effect”.

I listened to part of one if his audiobooks years ago. Okay at first, then got theologically sketchy.
Won’t read anything by him, Martin, etc. Too much solid, orthodox work out there.
