What's wrong with this church?

Just for kicks, please take a look at these photos of this humble little cathedral and see how many bizarre little oddities you find. Don’t let the fact that it’s a cathedral give you delusions that it’s in any way “orthodox”.

For extra credit, do comment on the statue of Mary in the background on the far left of the “altar”. Quite “unique”, isn’t it?

For those outside of Michigan, you should know (as if you don’t now with this thread):

Saginaw and Gaylord dioceses are probably the saddest and weakest in the state. Blame the bishop for letting the flock wander where they will. An orthodox parish sticks out like a beacon, but they are very few in these two locations. May the bishops retire early, be replaced by solid Catholic leadership, and may the flock humbly return to be re-educated in the Faith of Our Fathers.

PS, thanks for telling me that was “Mary” I thought it was a liturgical dancer turned to a pillar of salt.
 
For one thing, there are a lot of oragami type decorations dangling from the ceiling, so I really can’t make out anything else. I can barely see the Mary statue, does she have one arm raised or something?

Anyways, the Martha Stewart hanging star decor is distracting. I don’t go for this trendy K-mart stuff. What is that bulletin board looking thing in the middle? and what’s with the rustic stick cross?

The Bishop of Saginaw, Kenneth Untener, recently passed away. I am praying that God will bless the Diocese of Saginaw with a strong and loving shepherd who truly loves the Church and is obedient.
 
So the Bishop’s into astrology…big deal, (I saw the big dipper up there!)…Anyhow, as long as he doesn’t whip out a crystal ball and cards he’s as orthodox as most bishops today!

They must have had a blue lite special on stars?!..

As did the Bishop of Grand Rapids. We have regular Holy Hours for both positions in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. We are part of the Lansing Diocese, so pray for us too.

Pray for us in the deacon formation program here in the Diocese of Gaylord.
 
Our parish, St. Anne, is fairly orthodox. It is also home to Mike Maturen, who will be leading the adult faith formation before Sunday Mass. Mike will be appearing with Marcus Grodi on EWTN on Aug 30 to tell his reversion story. Be sure to tune in!!!

That will be 8 PM 8/30 on “The Journey Home” on EWTN, that is Charter Cable channel 17 in the Harrisville, Oscoda, Tawas area.
 
Dissenters have no taste in art or architecture. It has always stunned me when I am shown a truly horrid church and am told that it is beautiful. I wonder if the person really believes it or if they simply don’t know what beauty is.

I would not call Tom Monahan (Domino’s Pizza, Detroit Tigers, etc) a dissenter, but his idea of a church in Naples Florida (or the one he funded in Nicaragua too) is horrid. Looks like a big green house, and the one in Nicaragua is referred to as the nipple-dome. He was and propably still is a lover of Frank Lloyd Wright arch. but really, give me a church from the middle ages over most gymnasiums of today.

Didn’t anyone notice that there’s not a single cross or crucifix anywhere in the church? Not one. The wooden ones you’re seeing were outside the cathedral for Christmas (which is what the stars were up for), but there’s hardly anything distinguishing this church as being the slightest bit Catholic.

BTW, do take note of the nice padded chairs for everyone to sit upon (they are quite comfy) and the complete lack of any way to kneel.
 
THAT’S the Virgin Mary? It looks more like Catwoman!!!

Wasn’t there an article in USA Today or some other paper here a few years ago discussing the growing trend of people to not kneel in church? Apparently some don’t do so because it’s uncomfortable or because “God doesn’t want us to grovel,” and so on and so on. Anyway, the thrust of the article is that there are some arrogant so-and-sos in this country.
 
That’s Mary? It looks like she’s doing some sort of yogic pose or something…
 
Those on the fringes are never happy with the Catholic Church: many on the “right” are unhappy at how “liberal” the US bishops have become and many on the “left” are unhappy at how “conservative” the US bishops are (yes, there are people who actually think they are too conservative!)

Um, a bishop into astology would be a big deal–a very big deal. Astrology is directly contrary to the teachings of the church. First commandment, and all that.

Or was this sarcasm? Sarcasm is sometimes lost on me.

Yeah, maybe it’s because they’ve moved the altar forward into what was the congregation’s space for the sake of “inclusion,” but instead it pushed more people out. At this rate, given another round of wreckovation, the altar could reach the vestibule.

I wish more churches were crowded.

Think about it. This is perfectly logical. They really think it is beautiful. Eve thought the apple was beautiful, too.

The church needs to have a crucifix, true. (Part of the GIRM).
And some of the “art” is definitely an acquired taste.
But did you check the links to see more about what people in this parish DO?

I did.
I saw the children having their first Eucharist–and an emphasis directly stated that Jesus was PRESENT in the bread and wine.

I saw the corporal works of mercy laid out, and groups in which to do them.

I don’t know–I suppose I could be in the most beautiful looking church, full of stained glass windows, offering Perpetual Adoration, Lady chapels, statues of saints, holy cards, candles etc.

but if the people there were just “Christmas elves and Easter bunnies”, or worse yet, the sort of “Sunday Catholic” who prided him or herself on the EXTERNALS of what their church LOOKED like yet did NOTHING else,

I think I’d prefer being in even an architectural monstrosity, provided the people took their stewardship and faith seriously.
