American-style funnies, definitely Dilbert. Comic book, a tie between Hellboy and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Japanese comic, tie between Naruto and xxxHolic (pronounced Holic; the Xes are supposed to be multiplication signs).
American style cartoons, tie between Pinky and the Brain and Futurama. Anime, a tie between Naruto, GunXSword (a paean to married love!) and Solty Rei.

Anybody here ever see Jack Kovalic’s “Dork Tower”, about geeks? God I wish that comic wasn’t about me. Then there was the classic Yamara, that ran in Dragon magazine for years: that rocked.
And then there’s Azumanga Daioh, which is a four-panel gag manga–i.e., a comic strip.

I agree with most of the above-posters, but also wish to put in a vote for Mallard Fillmore - interesting, well-illustrated political strip. Love some of the points made in it.
I also like User Friendly, the geek webcomic, but can’t recommend it for everyone because there’s a fair amount of trashy language and behavior in it.

comic strip? probably dilbert. i also love the far side although it’s not really a strip per se.
cartoon? probably ren and stimpy. hilarious, irreverent. still funny as i grow older, but in a different way. had a lot of crude humor, subtle sex jokes, but it was very classy in its presentation. it was a very old school tex avery-esque show. the best artwork, by hand. the use of classic cartoony soundtracks. it’s a great show. maybe that’s why it’s so great. it was this subversive crude show disguised as a neo-classic kids’ show.

calvin and hobbes and bloom county are great modern era toons.
i didn’t like the outland transition Breathed did.
