  • Whitney Houston’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl in 1991
  • “Only in America” by Brooks & Dunn
  • “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagles Fly” by Aaron Tippin
  • “America the Beautiful”, as performed by Ray Charles
We’re blessed with numerous exceptional patriotic songs.

With the 4th of July approaching, what is your favorite of all our great patriotic songs?

“Proud to be an American” by Lee Greenwood.

I got to see him at our county fair, I think it was 2002 or 2003. I think that whole crowd stood or cried during that song! It was a difficult time for our country after 9/11.
I can’t believe 19 years later there are so many citizens who hate our country.

I love the Coke 2014 Super bowl rendition of America the beautiful. Both my husband and I are immigrants from two different countries and most of our friends are immigrants too.

‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’.

“Mine eyes have seen the glory…”.

God save the Queen and God erhalte Franz den Kaiser.

The tune of the former inspired Haydn to write the latter.

I’m honestly not a big fan of most patriotic songs.

Does “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” count? It’s the Navy hymn.

Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copeland. Maybe not “patriotic” per se but feels very American.

As an aside, I can’t stand that Lee Greenwood “proud to be an American” song. Different strokes for different folks, but to me it’s the musical equivalent of cheese whiz.

I LOVE “Living in America.” James Brown is absolutely proof positive that God exists: only God could make someone like James Brown.

Plus you gotta love how he managed to name all those US cities - “all the wonderful, old familiar names.”

Other faves:

–Proud to be an American;
–Battle Hymn of the Republic;
–America the Beautiful (best when all verses are sung)

And best of all: The Star Spangled Banner - particularly when sung with its last 2 words, “play ball!”

Bernie Sanders made the best campaign ad ever with fragments from this song.

(Full disclosure: I voted for Bernie in the 2016 primaries as the lesser of two evils versus Hillary Clinton. I do like some of his policies, and one commentator noted that his health care and welfare initiatives, if enacted, would actually make it easier for pregnant women to keep their babies and raise them.)

I also like Fanfare For The Common Man, and up to a point, This Land Is Your Land. Simple Gifts is nice in a way, but sounds too much like the ultimate Bolshevik fever dream of an America rendered harmless in the face of godless communistic secularism, kind of like the East German anthem Auferstanden aus Ruinen.
