He asked you to take a drink of his wine and you take one drink just to passify him. In the process he spills his wine all over you. In an instant you turn to him to give him a piece of your mind and in that instant you hit an old man, killing him. You stop the car and examine the man and he is dead. Both you and your friend are 4th year medical students. There’s no ID on the man.

If you call the police you’re going to jail. You’re going to have to leave medical school. You’ll be tried in civil court for millions. And you have to support your wife and three kids thus injuring them all as well as losing your freedom. You can’t bring the man back to life. God knows it was an accident. No evidence was left at the scene. No Witnesess.

What do I say? Good grief, I hope and pray to God that you are presenting a hypothetical situation. I think you know what would be the right thing to do (at least I hope so).

Easy Seeker Jen…Yes, completely hypothetical. Any mabe my moral compass is off to even contemplate this scenerio but I think it’s a valid question.

IMO the only right thing to do would be to immediately report the situation. Yes, I think it would be a sin to drive off and not take responsibility for one’s actions, regardless of the lack of evidence. Would it mean dropping out of med school and going to prison? Most likely. But compare that to the fact that someone lost his life in the accident, and suddenly med school doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

Don’t understand why the question is even asked. The answer is obvious. You MUST report the incident.

By using fear of assumptions in this story, the reader might overlook some comforting things:

For example, alcohol levels can be accurately tested. With proper advising, a good defense can be made, the end result being high fines or license suspension.

There’s also the assumption that by looking away the driver is at fault for killing the man. That seems to depend on what happened. Highway jaywalkers rarely receive compassion in cases. If the driver was found to be driving safely and correctly and the position of the old man was found to be illegal or unsafe, that also brings a good defense.

But the biggest assumption of all is that the driver’s choice is at the end ("should he call the police or drive away) this is just plain stupid. The driver’s choice was way back in the beginning of the story. He chose to drink and drive.

This is just what people do about abortion. The reader is made to assume the choice lies at the end (kill the baby or not) whereas the choice was in the beginning. You choose to engage in sexual intercourse.

without comment on the question itself or the person asking it, of course you call police, give them the facts, let them investigate the accident including the breath test. Since this is a hypothetical case it is not out of place to observe that both of them sound too dumb for medical school anyway.

How would you be sued? Since he is dead he could not sue.

And if you say family, then you introduce many what ifs and “what ifs” kill hypotheticals

But overall call the police. If you are so worried about the welfare of your family. How about you knowing your kids should not look up to their father as an honorable man anymore?
