Mostly it’s the Problem of Evil, and the Problem of Hell. I also have been thinking about it and researching a lot, and I see very little evidence that points to God’s existence. Obviously there is some, such as miracles, but I’m not sure if it’s enough to be convincing.
However these individual issues aren’t the focus of this question. Basically, right now I’m trying to find peoples’ reasons for believing what they believe. There are a lot of extremely smart people on both sides of the debate, and I want to know where they get there conviction from.
Poseidon:
I can give you one possible way of making all of this intelligible. Matter (including men and women) consists of a trillion or two atoms. Consider what an atom is. An atom consists of a nucleus of
point particles. Vibrating in a shell outside of the nucleus are electrons, which are point particles too. Consider this
shell. This shell consists of what exactly? We think it consists of
space, that is, its own tiny portion of infinite space. But, space is not so
tiny! The typical electron shell is 50,000 times larger than the nucleus.
Now, what is a point particle? Well, not much.
Points are considered to be dimensionless, i.e., without dimension: no length; no width; and, no height. Think of it as though it is something so flat that it only has one side. (Like certain steaks in certain restaurants!

) Thus we have something that has no three-dimensionality and, therfore, no mass!
In the first place, how did this come about? Only a supremely powerful and supremely intelligent fabricator could have done this. Add to this, that before any of this was fabricated in any way, shape, or form, there was only infinite nothingness, which Yppop calls the Infinite Nothingness, or “the Mind of God.”
Why is it that we humans tend to focus our attentions on our own
masses as our closest personal possessions and, therefore, Reality? Why do we tend to believe our imaginations to the extent that we do, so that our supposed weight/mass becomes the weight/mass of what is Real? Is it possible that our self-focus - for such a long
time? - has tricked us into thinking that
matter is real, or that all of this came about by some natural process?
I don’t know - I’m just throwing out some hypotheses.
Years ago, men and women used to say that we were 98% water. We’re not. We’re 100% nothingness with zero-dimensionality. So, we were able to construct this huge fabric of physical stuff - by ourselves, How? When? Where? By what intelligence? By what causal mechanisms? By what necessity of ‘evolution?’ Seems to me to point inexorably to a Cause of causes, a Mover of movers, a Necessity within that which possesses so little of its own necessity that it is nothingness? And then, to top all of this off, the vast majority of humanoids trust in a
morality that helps the Maker sustain all of this for as long as His algorithms allow us. And, there is no God?
Where am I wrong?
God bless,
