Willie Nelson I believe. “Could have been the whiskey, might have been the gin. Could have been the three or four six packs I don’t know, but look at the state I’m in.”

Both the articles you posted cite the same source: Mr. Scalfari, a 93-year-old “journalist” who doesn’t take notes or record interviews, but claims to reproduce in his articles verbatim exactly what the Pope actually said.

Let’s break this down:
93 years old
Doesn’t take notes
Doesn’t record interviews
But claims to repeat what the Pope actually said

Yeah, this is about as credible as my cat talking to me.

Not even worth thinking about.
And is an atheist, by the way. Actually, those condemned to hell do disappear. At least from the sight of God. They choose their own exile.

Somewhere else. Both of the articles you mentioned are the exact same reference to the article by Mr. Scalfari. He is an atheist and claims to reproduce these interviews verbatim from memory. This isn’t the first fantasy he has published, and even he has admitted some of the statements he has made are not attributable to Pope Francis.

we have already had threads on this. Pope Francis never denied the existence of hell

Anyone who hasn’t been to Hell, including the authors of the Bible, and all the clergy, don’t know for sure, do they? they can only say what they believe.

false in what you quoted, thats annihiliation you refer to and the pope does not believe in that, scripture is the only authority for that, and anniliation is not in scripture.

Matthew 13:41-42 The Son of man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of falling and all who do evil, and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

The National Catholic Reporter’s only good use is to line a bird cage.

The Pope did not say there is no Hell.
That is made up fiction by an avowed atheist interviewer who does not even make notes or recordings of the interview.
Why would anyone, especially a Catholic believe such a thing.
Anyone who even thinks there might be truth to this is doing the Pope a disservice.

Strangely, some non-Catholics seem to be trying to paint Pope Francis in as positive or negative a light as possible. Both sides have their reasons for wanting this to be true.

There’s also some Catholics who look for any reason to hate on Pope Francis. I remember when this first broke that those people started their usual “POPE FRANCIS IS A HERETIC” dance.

Honestly, though, I think most people just skim headlines on Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit and then ask the question before reading the article carefully.

I believe “Hell” is not a physical place, but a state of being. A state of being completely empty and miserable because we have rejected God (ie, rejected goodness and love).

The worst part of this “interview” is that it wasn’t even supposed to be an interview at all. Apparently, the Pope has met with this guy many times in a private setting. This was not supposed to be fodder for any kind of published article. It was a private conversation between “friends”. I’m not sure about their relationship. Perhaps the Holy Father enjoys having conversations (or debates) with him about spiritual subjects. He might be hoping to convert the man from his atheistic views. But, this guy has written things in other articles that were pulled out of context from these “conversations” with Pope Francis, that were just as bad as this one. You would think that the Pope would learn his lesson not to trust this guy after the same types of things continue to happen, multiple times.

In all fairness, Pope Francis has preached against the devil plenty of times, obviously he believes in hell.

I have imagined meeting the most wonderful, intelligent and loving entity who knows me completely and really ‘gets’ me, understands everything about me and what made me what I am and how I behaved and why and yet still showers me with unconditional love and I sense that I want to be subsumed by the entity and immerse myself totally in that love and positive regard and warmth of that benevolence for all eternity.

Now to be told gently but firmly that it would be impossible to stay, to be denied that union would be the most awful thing that could ever occur.

Personally I don’t need to picture hell, just imagine that denial.

Does the pope still give him interviews? Isn’t it mentioned that the interviews are not recorded? So what proof is there that the pope actually gives the interviews? Who in this millennium will have an interview with the pope without recording it? These are the questions you should ask instead of rushing into conclusions based on very questionable sources.

Is it not ironic that people do not mention what is actually recorded (i.e. when he actually says many times the Devil is real which in all fairness implies there is hell) and people prefer to make all sorts of conclusions about the Pope on what is not recorded he said?
