Hey everyone, I am trying to get a motorcycle license, but the only course available is a 3 day course covering Friday night, all day Saturday, and All day Sunday, I go to Mass every week, but am I missing my obligation by getting my motorcycle license? I am 16 years old and don’t like missing mass, but I wondered if this is an eligible reason because there is no other time, thanks

Just get a car. Motorcycles are unnecessary and unsafe. Not as practical as a car when transporting items or people too.

Well as a teenager, it’s cheaper for gas and fits the climate very well, I can’t take passengers anyway

Are there any Sunday evening masses near you to attend?

This is not a permittable reason to miss mass.

That’s a bummer. 🙁

As one faithful Catholic to another, I advise you to attend mass. It is a mortal sin to skip out on mass for reasons that are not serious, and I’d say this is not a serious issue.

Perhaps you will get a chance in the future to take a class elsewhere at a different time. But for the time being, go to mass.

Yea I kinda figured 😦 literally every class is held on those dates, YEAR ROUND, bummer

I think you should speak to your Pastor about this. Explain to him what you wrote in your initial post. Maybe you can get a dispensation. Only he can tell you that.

Well people here would like to tell you you may not miss mass, that is not the actual case. You should discuss this with your pastor, he can dispense you from your obligation that weekend. Simply explain to him that you will be taking a course that does not allow a time for you to attend mass.

A) that’s your opinion. Having a transportation it may indeed be a serious reason in many families.

B) His priest can dispense him, also.

OP. As a parent I would never ever let a 16 year old get a motorcycle license. And I’d like to think my kids would view the Mass as greater than a class.

BUT. If its legal, and you have your parents support you may indeed ask for a dispensation. In my experience dispensation are liberally given and require nothing more than a quick " hey father, I have a quick question…" I’d worry more about meeting your maker early because of a motorcycle than I would about missing Mass! But then again at 16 I was racing cars up and down ski resort roads, riding bulls and horses and hunting with guns after school so I dont really have a lot of credibility here. Lol

No it’s not unfortunately, at least the way I’m reading it.

What about Sunday evening mass (if your parish has it)?

Yup, priests can excuse you from your obligation. If he explains that this is the only way to get the license he needs, his priest may very well grant the dispensation. He just needs to talk to his priest beforehand.

No, the course ends at 630, mass will Have already started
Have you checked out other churches?

The last Sunday mass in my city starts at 8pm.

I’ve been there many times when I was doing stuff and ran late.

Typically there were only about half a dozen people there and the priest is retired officially and past 80,.His mother tongue isn’t English and he mumbles along in his homilies and you can’t understand him half the time. There is no singing either and everything else is rather cut short. But mass is mass, right?

Also, it’s a beautiful old church that I don’t otherwise get to see the inside of.

But I imagine the only acceptable scenario is that he NEEDS to get this license for transportation.

The priest decides what’s an acceptable reason and what’s not. It generally doesn’t need to be a life and death NEED. It just can’t be completely trivial like “I want to watch something on tv” or something.

As a fellow motorcycle rider I would recommend going to mass during the weekday, either before or after the weekend you need to test. As for riding motorcycles on the road, I pray you will be responsible and safe.
