Wheelies and sin

Have your parents approved of you driving a motorcycle? If so, then simply ask your pastor for a dispensation.

Maybe, maybe not. Even if he doesn’t absolutely “need” the license and it’s just a convenient thing to have, the pastor could make the call that missing Sunday Mass on a one-time basis (with the dispensation obviously) isn’t going to hurt him spiritually, and might just require him to attend some other day of the week to gain the same graces. Again, not our call.

As others have said, your priest can give you a dispensation to miss mass that weekend (and it does not need to be a life or death situation as some seem to be suggesting). I don’t know for certain, but since you’re only sixteen he may want to know if your parents support you getting your license before approving, so if one of them could be with you when you ask…

OP, it’s nice that you are concerned about missing Mass. Please do speak to your priest in advance and see if you can get a dispensation.
And if he does give you the dispensation, then maybe as a “thank you” to Jesus consider attending a daily Mass that you wouldn’t normally go to. It doesn’t “make up” for the Sunday one but it is a nice gesture towards God.

And don’t forget to invoke God’s protection each time you ride.

I wouldn’t say there’s a hard NOT, but where I’m at there really isn’t. One of my past co-workers was an instructor for one of these classes. Here they’re usually on the weekend to allow for travel and work schedules of both the students and the instructors.

I got my license by just taking the written test and eventually doing the obstacle course at the MVD a couple months later, so yes it probably can be done other ways. I’m assuming what the OP wants to do is take a 3rd party saftey course. After getting my license I always recommended to others interested in riding to do the 3rd party course. I didn’t go that route only because at that time I lived in the middle of nowhere and had plenty of empty roads to practice on.

But I imagine the only acceptable scenario is that he NEEDS to get this license for transportation.
Priests give dispensations for all sorts of things, such as vacations where you’re going to be someplace without access to Mass, or family events. It’s not your call anyway, it’s the priest’s.

You’re not being respectful at all. Show me some sources that lay out the rules and regulations regarding dispensation. Because I sure as heck know that “hey I want to go on a tropical vacation, but darn I can’t make it to mass, but that’s ok right Father?” won’t cut it.

I want sources.

I’m being quite respectful. You have already told the OP incorrectly that if he misses Mass he’ll be committing mortal sin, and as 1ke said, you don’t seem to understand the idea of dispensations.

Even Fr. Z recognizes that vacations can be legitimate reasons for a dispensation. There are many areas of the world where you cannot access a Catholic Mass on a Sunday, including on many cruise lines, remote areas, situations where you will be arriving too late to attend the available Masses in an area which may have only a few and in places where it’s hard for you to access them. The key thing is to discuss the situation with your priest in advance if you think you will be caught in one of those situations. And if there is some way you can still go to Mass, like you just happen to find a Catholic church holding Mass right next to your hotel or something when you get there, then you should certainly attend it.

You could ask your pastor for a dispensation if you’re worried.

You’re not going to find a list of reasons for giving dispensation, because it’s up to the priest’s discretion. Going on a vacation to an area where you can’t access Mass might very well “cut it”. I’m not sure why this is so shocking to you. It’s really not that crazy.

I want official church teaching regarding dispensation. Anything? Anyone have sources other than a blog post? I’m genuinely curious.

From the article: The Catechism of the Catholic Church in No. 2181 says that Catholics “are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) **or dispensed by their own pastor.” **And the Code of Canon Law in No. 1245 allows a pastor, in individual cases, to dispense from the Mass obligation “for a just cause.” (Note that the code says “for a just cause” rather than for a “grave” or “serious” cause.)

Father Z is generally considered by traditionalists to be “not just a blog post.”
Are you familiar at all with Catholic apologists?
Or the leading traditionalist priests?
