When and where does Jesus institute the sacrament of marriage?

I know that a sacrament is ‘an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace’. I think I know when and where He institutes all the other sacraments, most of them are in stories in the bible. But I was just trying to figure out, where is it that He institutes the sacrament of marriage? Can anyone point me to where I might find a relevant story about it, if there is one? Did Jesus actually act as a marriage celebrant or something?

I think I answered this question before. The sacrament was not instituted by Jesus since it existed well before his incarnation. The sacrament of marriage began with the creation of Eve:
Gen 2:24
For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

More important is the following line: ‘what God has joined let not man put asunder’ 🙂

Of course we can’t underestimate the significance of the Wedding of Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle in order to get that particular marriage off to a happy as well as holy start!

Marriage was instituted by God in Genesis 1:27 and 2:24
However it was raised by Christ to the level of a Sacrament. Matt 10"7-9

Indeed. The Catechism:
1613 On the threshold of his public life Jesus performs his first sign - at his mother’s request - during a wedding feast. The Church attaches great importance to Jesus’ presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ’s presence.

God created marriage for the good of the spouses. Christ elevated marriage to a Sacrament. So, yes, Jesus did institute the Sacrament of Marriage, which now gives grace to the spouses and symbolizes Christ’s relationship to the Church (see Matthew 10 and Ephesians 5).

Baptisms were also performed prior to Jesus’ Incarnation. However, he raised that symbolic washing away of sins to a Sacrament, which is a *real * washing away of sins.

Matthew 10:7-9:
"7 As you go make this proclomation: The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Cure the sick, raise the dead cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. 9 Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;

Where and when did “annulment” start?

An annulment means that the marriage was not valid. In other words, a canonically valid marriage never took place.

“Divorce is something that was; Annulments recognize that something* never* was.”

I understand the difference. But where and when is the first documented annulment?

That’s right don’t take silver or copper or she will take it from you!

Sorry I typed it wrong. Matthew 19:4-7

I would suggest going to “Ask the Apologist” with that question.
