When being martyred - better to suffer joyfully or somberly?

St Thomas More was well known for being witty during his life, and his execution seems to be no different-.

He said something like ‘see me safe up [onto the scaffold where he was to die] … as for my coming down I can shift [manage] for myself!’

My favorite has to be the Sixteen Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne. They all joyfully chanted their way to the guillotine. I’m absolutely in awe of these holy and courageous women of Faith!!!
