I have had heart surgery, five stents, a pacemaker, and need heart medication to remain functional. At the age of 87+ and with breathing difficulty, I did not dare chance a trip to church on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception because of the wind and cold. At what age or situation can elderly Catholics be permitted to avoid attending Mass on Sundays and holy days without committing mortal sin? I frequently assist at weekday Mass when possible, but have great difficuly with my conscience due to not having attended Mass on the Virgin Mary’s holy day. I know this situation will reoccur this winter on Sundays.
