I have recently discovered the section for the Office of the Dead in Christian Prayer, which I’m sure many of you are familiar with. I’m wondering, when is it acceptable/allowed to substitute the day’s normal “rotation” of hours for a day of the Office of the Dead? Also, can I pray just the office of readings from the Office of the Dead along with the normal hours for a day? Thank you for all responses, and God bless all 🙂

I’m not aware of any specific instructions for when it can be prayed in the LOTH. I’ve always used the rules for celebrating Masses for the dead as a guideline for the Office:

Mass for the dead may be celebrated on any weekday in Ordinary Time unless there’s a feast or obligatory memorial.

On receiving news of a death, on final burial, or on the first anniversary of death, Mass for the dead may be said on any day other than a Sunday, Feast, Holy Week, Octave of Easter, or Ash Wednesday.

A funeral may occur on any day except a Holy Day of Obligation, A Sunday of Advent, Lent, or Easter, or during the Paschal Triduum or on Holy Thursday.
