When can one use violent force?

Under what circumstances is it permissable for Christians to use force. I am not talking about military force unless it relates to individuals. I am talking about civilians using force, particularly violent force. Can it ever be defended morally?
 
HI,

Violent force can be used in self-defense or in the defense of the innnocent–so long as it is in proportion to that from which one is being attacked–and this only if it is necessary.
