there is no reason why the Lord wouldn’t want us to enjoy a bit of wine, it is the fruit of the vine. Moderation is the key, drunkenness is gluttony. Know thy limit…
it was also more watered down like others have said less alcoholic content.

6 jars 20-30 gallons each turned into wine. I would say it was a huge wedding. Back then people didn’t have a lot of recreation activities. A wedding meant a chance to relax and have fun so lots of people would go.
As I recall – weddings were often not single day events.

Lol, and who said Christ didn’t drink some wine ?
Jesus himself said he came eating and drinking and for that he was called a glutton and a wine-bibber. In light of that, there was no reason to think that Jesus would not have engaged in festivities at a festive time.

While Jesus made a lot more wine it doesn’t mean the people were drunk. It could be they were out because more people showed up than expected. So more wine just means everyone had some to drink and not drunk as a skunk so to speak.

Everything in moderation man, that is what the Church teaches Eph 5:18

In addtion to the amazing replies that gave me much to ponder-
Water back then was murky and wine making purified It. Perhaps the better wine was more sanitary. I do not believe Our Lord condoned drunkenness.
Just a thought.
You are totally right about this and seems that the OP is missing the fact that we are talking about something that happened over 2000 years ago. Back then there were no water treatment plants and water was heavily polluted People could not drink plain water because the water was filled with disease transmitting bacteria so they would use wine to kill the bacteria in the water in order to make it drinkeable. This practice is still used in poor areas of the middle east and what they do is mix one part wine into three parts of water. This mixture kills harmful bacteria and makes water safe for human consumption so the reason why the lack of wine is such a big issue is because if wine is over the mixture can’t be done therefore the water at the wedding is polluted. This is not about people getting drunk at a party. This is about a real necessity and that is why Mary asks Jesus for help. But more importantly, as other stated the circumstances surrounding the miracle are not the important thing here but the message of the story.

Oh and just to add, have you ever wondered why at consagration the priest mixes water with wine? Precisely because of the above. Whenever the bible talks about Jesus drinking wine in reality it was wine diluted in water. As a result from this tradition, the eucharistic wine is the mixture between wine and water.

It is important to note:

The text does not say that anyone was drunk -but rather that the wine had run out.

Such can happen due to more guests showing up than expected or not saving up enough wine due to lack of funds etc.
What you say is true, but I can’t help but laugh at those who insist that more than 1-2 glasses of wine is ‘excessive.’ You know people had a lot more than that at Cana and Jesus didn’t mind at all. 🙂

Remember the story spoke of some wine being better than other wine.

There’s such a thing as a ‘good’ 25/75 mix of wine/water?

They were drinking wine for reasons that went beyond merely satisfying their thirst. This was a party!
