When did Annual Appeal for the diocese start?

Does anyone know in what approximate year the Annual Diocesan Appeal started? How did things get funded before that?

I would guess it was different in every diocese. Why not call the chancery and find out for your particular place?
 
Early eighties, as the previous poster stated various by diocese to diocese.
 
Thanks - I’m not too concerned about the actual year - nor do I care what happened in my diocese specifically.

But how were things funded before? Just by a parish assessment?

don’t know – what diocese are you in? ours is only a few years old. And do you mean an appeal for specific earmarked diocesan expenses or projects, or the Bishop’s Appeal to fund charitable organizations?

the ordinary expenses of the diocese are met by a tax on parish collections, generally 10-11%, direct donations, bequest, and development (investment income). In most dioceses the annual collection for the bishop funds specific projects–here it has been retirement homes for priests, seminary, diocesan newspaper. It can also be used to meet shortfall in collections from parishes which are down due to the economy. your diocesan website may have the history of the appeal.
 
In my former diocese it was in the early 1960s. I would imagine that the sixties and seventies saw an expansion of annual appeals across the country, as many dioceses became involved in many more social ministries than they previously had. Everything from prolife activities to family counseling to NFP classes to health ministries to immigrant services–the list goes on. Most dioceses have much more on their social services plate now than they did fifty years ago. 😉
