My initial question was re: the portion of the creed “he descended into hell and on the third day he arose again,” I have heard this explained but was wondering if anyone could explain a little better. The whole idea of Abrahams bosum and that Jesus opened the gates of heaven, and that prior to Jesus, all who had died went to Hadees (Sheol). I have read the catechism re: this and all the scripture passages that it quotes but I am still not completely clear.
“…He descended into Hell…” There are TWO variances of interpretation.
!1) His “descent into Hell” was an actual visi by Our Lord into Hell and offering redemption to the souls that had fallen before the knowledge of God (good and evil was known to mankind at the time of the Fall of Adam and Eve. Those fallen souls were given an opportunity to renounce their past live and therby find salvation.
That is one theory that is sort of fuzzy to my mind.
  1. “…He descended into Hell…” in the strict interpretation of the Old Teastament “hell” was a dimension of the dead and not a place of eternal damnation…it was a place for souls that have entered mortality.
This one seems a lot easier to grasp, to me at least. Take your pick.
