When did the Church begin

This guy is asking me “When does the Church say the Church of Christ was set up?” I’m not sure what he’s getting at, but I was wondering whether it is when Christ started teaching the apostles, or when Christ commmissioned them to baptize all nations, or at pentecost. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Pentacost is considered the “birthday” of the Church, but technically you could say it started with Moses and became fully revealed by Christ. Christ then selected and trained the Apostles personally and gave them the authority of bidning & loosing. The Old Testament priesthood was then effectively “fired”. Remember God created only one religion…

These verses?

Eph 1:4* As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity. *

Eph 1:5 Who hath predestinated us unto the adoption of children through Jesus Christ unto himself: according to the purpose of his will:

I don’t think those verses reflect the beginning of the Church, but rather St. Paul is identifying who the elect are. Clearly, starting with Moses do we see beliefs, structure, ritual and priesthood.

Thanks, I think that is a good approach. The covenant actually began with Adam and Eve, then Noah, then Abraham, then Moses, David, and was fulfilled in Christ. I think I’ll take that approach, showing that the covenant has been there since the beginning of human existence. Thanks again!

Pentecost for those who are followers of Christ as someone mentioned is the “birthday” of the Church.

Although I would make sure the guy is not refering to the denomination “the Church of Christ” who claim to have been set up at the time of Christ.

I’m pretty sure he isn’t talking about the denomination. He is a landmark baptist. I think he’s got some sort of agenda in mind when asking this question. He is asking when the Catholic Church says it was established. I guess he’s looking for a certain moment or something. I did mention to him the traditional “birthday” of the church, but also mentioned that it isn’t like a whole new church. It has grown out of the old covenants fromt he beginning of human existence. If he is baptist you may wish to look into the “Trail of Blood”? I think it is called. Some baptists claim to be the church established by Christ. I believe there are a few threads around here.

Ahh I found this specifically in the forums about Landmark Baptist.
