A lot of non-Catholic churches call themselves Catholic, because, whether it’s articulate or not by the churchgoers, the churhes want to appear as the one true church, and since Catholicity is one of the four marks of the Church of Christ, the churches call themselves Catholic.

The Eastern Orthodox, for example, say they are the Orthodox Catholic Church, or the Orthodox Holy Church according to some, and claim this title has been used by the Church of Christ since some council or whatnot. However, no one is able to show any evidence of this claim.

On the contrary, the Catholic Church is the only Church in the world with the official title “Catholic Church” and whose official name has been recognized since her earliest times, as this website shows (cites the Church Fathers who call the Church of Christ the “Catholic Church”)

You can crosscheck what the website claims, too, by reading the writings of the Church Fathers

It is also interesting to note that the term “Roman Catholic” was started by non-Catholic Christians to mock the Catholic Church, that is, that Catholics are in communion with Rome. The Catholic Church dose not use the term “Roman Catholic” becuase it recognizes that it is communion with the members of the Body of Christ and submission to the Vicar of Christ (the Pope) that is mandatory, not communion with and/or submission to the church in Rome.

Just as “Roman Catholic” started out as a derisive name, so did “Lutheran”. The proper name for Lutheran is Evangelical Catholic. It was never the intent of Luther or the reformers to separate from the Church. The Augsburg Confession was written as an appeal to continued unity in the catholic faith.
And true Lutherans continue to strive for this end.
