When Did the Concept of Mass by Age Group Begin?

I’ve never been to a Life Teen MASS, and I dont want to go either. Myself included and yoth my age generally (this is a growing trend), we dont want the guitars, the everybody happy go lucky kind of MASS. We want the Hardcore Catholic stuff. Im a Hardcore Catholic, I want the “Bells and Smells” MASS. Catholic youth my age, generally want the incensce, the bells, the Lingua Latina, The sacred silence, the Heavenly Chant, the extreme reverence etc. We have generally had enough. This isnt a circus, this isnt mtv hour, this isnt pay per view entertainment. This is Calvary, truly and wholly re-enacted in an unbloody manner. This is where the gate of Heaven touchs sinful earth, this is where the power of the most unbelievable force is acted out. A sacrifice is offered, not a guitar concert. Sorry to burst anyones bubble, but **thats just me, **Im a hardcore Catholic and proud of it!!
As you just said, it is you and your position.

Masses for teens and/or other specific groups are not always by their existence irreverent or unprayerful.

Sorry let me rephrase myself, MOST of my generation wants High MASS.

And of course, if you dont like it, I’m not calling you a bad Catholic damned to hell etc, Im just merely stating what the majority of Catholic youth are now going for. Its why the guitar MASS is just adults and you barely see any kids, you walk into an FSSP sunday MASS, and its full of kids!!
If there a formal and scientific study on this? I mean, I see our “Novus Ordo” parishes pretty full and I see there are a lot of active teens and young adults in the ministries of the RC archdiocese in our area and they all are seem to be fine with the OF. We have one FSSP parish and it is thriving, but it is one parish in about 50 or so “Novus Ordo” parishes.

Most of your generation doesn’t even know what a High Mass is supposed to be.

Walk in to any orthodox NO mass and you’ll see the same things.

You know what I see when I go back to the our local FSSP Mass, which I grew up in? A bunch of people so wrapped up in their own spiritual superiority its hard to breath. Yeah there are a bunch of kids, because if you don’t have 8+ your judged for not being open to God. If you don’t have or wear a Chapel Veil your judged because you not being modest, haven forbid you should walk in with your ankles showing or elbows. Oh, and don’t wear pants if your a woman… ever.

Is it like this everywhere, no. However, my experience is it as valid as yours 😛

I don’t remember these things existing when I first started going to Mass. Maybe around when I turned 10 (late 90’s) did I first hear about a teen Mass (Life Teen, unfortunately).

It just seems like you have (and forgive my blunt characterization of this) the serious Mass for the adults and the goofy Mass for the teens (although I have noticed blending of the two with time). As to some examples of this, well the most obvious is the music and I don’t need to elaborate on that. During Life Teen Masses I remember the whole church congregating around the altar. When I started going to Mass at college I remember some students telling me that we should not dress up for Mass there because it would make students feel uncomfortable and that they wanted to keep the Mass casual.

So when and how did this idea start that we can and should make youth Masses separate from adult Masses and that therefore we can throw out the rules in the former?
It’s a very protestant idea, and started happening around the 70s and 80s in the Catholic Church. Thankfully, we’re starting to get over this silliness…

You are so right that people play it fast and loose with the rubrics at youth Masses so often.

Teen Life was started in 1985 in an attempt to strengthen the faith of teenagers. The Church as a whole has never really sorted by Age group, and personally I would not be surprised if Teen Life is just a fad that ends up fading away.
I sure hope so!!!

I sure hope so!!!
WHY? just because YOU don’t like it?!

TYo an above post; I’m so tired of seeing all these remarks about something being "protestant’> Hey, guess what? Protestants aren’t the devil incarnate, and sometimes, they have nice ideas!

As is my experience too. Plenty of kids my age at latin mass? Sure. They also walk around with their noses up in the air, loudly and proudly declaring that THEY are going to heaven, and no one else.

The Mass is the Mass. No matter what language it is said in or what music is played. If anyone is fool enough to think they even dislike a certain Mass, they are risking damnation. Shane, shame, shame.

No, some are illicit and can be a sin to attended. Some are completely invalid and are a sin to attended, or not attended… since it really wasn’t mass hrmm…🤷.

So I shouldn’t be upset when they you Led Zeppelin for the communion “hymn”? Obviously the music does matter. If I’m irritated because they are ignoring the GIRM I am committing no sin.

Before you go shaming people you need authoritative proof we are in risk of damnation for not liking illicit or disrespectful Masses.

PS I’m by no means implying Teen Life is necessarily illicit or disrespectful. I’m just debating the point you can’t dislike “certain” mass.

Back to the original question of when Mass for different age groups began…

There have been “school Masses” since forever and several posters have talked about children’s Masses in the 1950s.

I think the issue has little to do with what protestants were up to, but more the rise of the whole concept of a “teenager” to begin with. Used to be we had children (through high school) and then adults. 16, 17, and 18 yos were a bit in the middle, but nothing much was geared to that age group.

Now we have age groups divided into “tweens” and “teens” and “young adults” and probably 10 other categories. These groups are pushed by psychologists, sales, and the media. Since everything else is catered around these age groups, it has naturally spread into church by people who are motivated by a desire to keep kids (of various ages) interested and engaged in their faith.

The problem, as we can see just from this thread, is that those age groups don’t automatically dictate what people think about religion and certainly not many other things. The music industry and clothing fashions can be divided into 100 “special interest” groups, religion cannot be.

We’d probably do better to just have one kind of Mass with the same hymns/music and same homily at each - no matter how many there are on a Sunday – and just let people select based on time.

I agree.

However, I do “prefer” a Mass with more traditional organ music. But I take whatever graces the Lord offers. I enjoy going to different churches and experiencing how Mass is offered at each of them.

The Mass that I least prefer is where this is “less reverence”. To me that is where there is is sitting instead of kneeling before the Real Presence. I only experienced that in the Bay Area but I have no idea if that is the norm there.

People don’t disdain the Mass. They disdain the way it’s celebrated. No shame there.

Whoa, Whoa, judemental folks on this thread, trying to put me in hell all because I said that the MAJORITY of the youth are starting to be attracted to the TLM, Priests and all.

Are you accusing me and the others who attend the TLM as pharisees?:mad:

I find that offensive, I will be the first to tell you that I am a sinner, and far from perfect.

I also find it offensive that you judge these youth that attend the TLM as also being “Holier than thou”. Sorry that we dont sink to the modern cultures level, at walk into Church with mini skirts, low cut shirts, shorts (if there is NO GOOD OR VALID REASON), etc., when Our LORD resides in the tabernacle. Sorry we dont protestantize ourselves and negate a whole ton of Catholic Tradition and Doctrine in the Process. I Love the Novus Ordo, I am fortunate to have it celebrated very reverently by our wonderful Priests. It is also the MASS I grew up Altar Serving. However, the Rubrcis lend themselves to ALOT of abuse because of the vernacular, and that is what I dont like. The Sacred Liturgy being abused. Changing the words of CONSECRATION to make it sound “Nicer”, not giving Gregorian Chant the primacy of place in Sacred Music, instead bringing in electric guitars and drums, Communion in the hand, Applause in Church etc. (Btw, Gregorian Chant is one to the easiest types of music to sing and sing well, so dont give me an excuse). Sorry we dont throw out the welcome mat for practicing homosexuals etc. Why arent you happy that at least the future of the Church, my generation, is sincerly trying to be holy??

No you are not less “Holy” for liking Teen Life MASSES, although there is a fine line in the sand and you cannot cross that. Our LORD is being sacrifice for YOUR AND MINE sins on the altar, Do you not want to show HIM some respect??

Far from it. Just that anyone who wishes to make a claim based on numbers should be able to back that up. It would be easy to say something, but let us be factual with our claims. Otherwise we should say it in a way that it doesn’t misrepresent society. I think as a society we’ve moved away from language precision that we like using certain terms without actually meaning them. But some people still take such claims seriously.

For example, in the archdiocese in my area, the Bishop is very supportive of the TLM. Yet the TLM hasn’t moved past the one FSSP parish and another diocesan parish on the far end of the metropolis. If there is really a “majority” demand on it, where are the other Latin Masses?

We are coming up, here are the stats…

:cool::cool::cool:

Also, for the Other poster who said that we TLM youth-goers have our noses in the air, I want to know one thing. Before the TLM MASS starts, there is always confessions being heard, and people going. I dont see this in alot of the areas I’ve been for the Novus Ordo? Again, Dont get me wrong, I love the Novus Ordo, The TLM etc., I also altar served at the Hungarian Greek Catholic Church, with the Eastern/Divine Liturgy. So I have been exposed to the different forms of the Sacred Liturgy.

👍

Actually here, the demand for the FSSP here has gone down as the individual parish’s have grown more orthodox.

That and they run people off, with a fundamental lack of charity. I know that’s not the case in all places but here it is really bad.

In our current NO parish priest gives sermons that rival my favorite FSSP priest. Oh, they ran him off too because he had such novel ideas like, a dialog mass in Latin, which btw was given approval in 1922.

No they don’t!

They have no idea what it is, and without proper catechesis would be bored stiff.
