At my church they come up during the Lamb of God. I read somewhere they shouldn’t come up until the priest self-communicates the Eucharist. What is the correct way to do it?

I believe that your “heard” correctly.

EMHC are to wait to enter the sanctuary area until the priest has self communicated…in our dioces [ans also at our parish] is that the EMHC come forward, purify their hands and stand on the floor near the steps to the sanctuary [ay our parish it is on the left transcept side and move to the altar after the priest consumes.

Also, the EMHC are to be handed the vessels [chalice or ciborium] by the priest [or deacon] and not to take them directly from the altar. However, sometimes we have had a visiting, retired priest and they forget…so a EMHC may have to pick up a vessel…
