When do the Cardinals go into conclave?

From what i’ve seen, the Conclave will begin around March 11, a week from this coming Monday.

I saw on a website the conclave start date might not be known until March 4.

March 4 (Monday) is the day the meet for the first time to decide what they want to do. The conclave won’t start until at least a few days after that.

Also, it seems that not all the cardinals are in Rome. Although it is only a few who are missing yet.

Thank you for that information. I had no idea it would be that long of a wait before we get our new Pope.

:D. Can’t wait. I’ve been reading about the Interregnum and the Conclave on EWTN’s website. Really interesting and informative.

One thing I like is how many of my Protestant co-workers are following this pretty keenly and asking me questions. I think deep down inside they’re fascinated-especially the history of the Papacy. I know of no other organization, religious or secular, that’s been in continual existence for 2, 000 years. Add to that the fact that the structure of our leadership has never changed, including the ceremonies involved. It’s absolutely fantastic.👍

Same here. It was that way in 2005, and it is the same way again now.
 
The Cardinals have not decided when they go into conclave. We should know by mid-week

Most people, unless they are hardcore Catholic-haters, or of a Christian sect that has really negative views of the Papacy (the “whore of Babylon” type of belief) do respond positively. 🙂 And in a place such as a work setting at least etiquette prevails most of the time. Which is a powerful thing when you think about it - everybody shutting up long enough to maybe learn something! 😉

But really, I’ve encountered what you describe, which is more than an absence of negativity - it’s a positive vibe. People’s minds are engaged by the fascination with the process of it all. They see that this is important to us and deserves respect.

They also are intrigued within their own minds and hearts. Most Christians and probably many of non-Christian faiths recognize that the Pope is a spiritual leader to the world even for non-Catholics. I think if suddenly the Papacy ceased to exist, they would discover they miss it too. Maybe not in the same way a Catholic would, but they’d feel a gap. Having a Pope provides among other benefits a focal point in a chaotic world. :yup:

Is there some reason you thought they were not already informally working it out amongst themselves? They are up there in the Vatican eating, socializing, and liturgizing together, getting to know one another.

That was sort of my thought the other day when Pope Benedict was greeting that long line of Cardinals. As the tv camera panned the room one could see little groups of them socializing. It was as if they were already informally beginning to lay ground work for how they would proceed.
