When do you start decorating for Christmas?

Your tiny tree is cute. I have a tiny tree on my mantle right now. It’s the one that once was on my desk when I was still working.

Trees are not a specifically Catholic thing anyway. Advent is all about “Prepare the way of the Lord,” so I don’t see a problem with doing the tree early.
We are supposed to be getting our tree today or tomorrow, and we will probably decorate it right when we get home. There is no convincing the family to wait. It’s not a big deal.

Or you can buy the plain green garland, twinkle lights, and some sparkly stuff at the dollar store and do it relatively cheap.
I need to buy a lot of garland this year. I got a bunch of boxes of lights for cheap last year. I’ll add poinsettias and pinecones. Cheap and cheerful!

My mother’s birthday, which is also the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

We don’t have thanksgiving here either. So just when Advent starts or Dec. I dont decorate much as I am alone and dont have room for a Christmas tree and I go to family for Christmas itself mostly… I just put up a few bits and a nativity scene. I send out cards end of Nov and start of Dec.
But I do a painting for Christmas which I print out and put on some cards, I start that way back when, lol.

Remind me and I’ll show you when it’s finished… it’s almost there.

Anyone else want to share what they are doing for decorating this year? It’s really interesting to see all the different traditions folks have. 🙂

I’ve kind of maintained the same tradition we had as kids. Mom would put up the Christmas tree and the manger the weekend before Christmas, usually Sunday afternoon. If Christmas fell really early in the week then she’d do on an evening mid-week.

When the kids were little I would put up other “kiddie” decorations like a cardboard angel and Santa and reindeer at the beginning of December although the Advent calendar had place of pride. As much as possible it was a non-treat, religious one.

The kids are long grown and living far away but an Advent calendar still goes up every year for my pleasure even if no other decorations are ever taken out. For the last several years that’s often the only decoration because we go away to our daughter’s to spend Christmas and New Year’s Day with her family. I might put lights in the window after the 15th, at which time I also listen to Christmas music. Before that date “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” by Quartette is on repeat on the CD player.

Well I’ll be getting the decorations out of the loft on Wednesday and they’ll all go up on Friday night after the little one has gone to bed. Hopefully it’ll all look nice and Christmassy when he gets up.

We don’t have any specific traditions except for the tree decorations being only one color. I grew up with all-white tree decorations. Ours are generally all red.

When I was growing up, Mom didn’t appreciate my desire for red clothing so she told me that only hookers wear red  {Imagine my little girl shock the next time we attended Mass on Palm Sunday.) Once I reached adulthood, I swathed myself in red and that eventually was extended to the Christmas tree as well.

On December 8th every year, feast of Our Lady.
Inmaculate Conception.

Sometime between Thanksgiving and the first Sunday of Advent. I have always loved Christmas lights and decorations. Personally, decorating for Christmas at the beginning of Advent helps with the anticipation and waiting for Christmas, rather than waiting until the day before. And I like to enjoy them longer.

Although I’m getting more nervous now that we have a baby on the verge of crawling (and who will be a toddler next year!)…we already have to fend off the cat from the tree! 😳😅

At Mass today the priest encouraged everyone to wait and decorate for Christmas, not for Advent. 🎄

First Sunday of Advent: Advent Calendar, Advent Wreath, some nativity scenes(minus baby Jesus and the kings)wehave 3 elves on the shelves with crowns glued to their heads that begin their journey to find the Baby Jesus. They dont always get into mischeif, they don’t always move, they aren’t spying for Santa. They keep going until the epiphany.

Before the Feast of Saint Nicholas: stockings, Christmas tree, outdoor Christmas lights. So that St. Nick can learn the lay of the land while he delivers shoe candy and will recognize the place when he returns on Christmas.

On the feast of St. Nick: put up any santa related decor. I purposefully dont have much of that. Just replace the “No Soliciting” sign with Santa. I’m considering giving him a speech bubble that says no soliciting. This might not count as decorating but it feels like it to me. We do a massive toy purge this day.

Christmas Day: Baby Jesus added to the Nativity Scenes.

Epihany: kings added to nativity scenes and the goofy elfish ones end their travels.
