I told my husband last year that I was saying “baa humbug” to the decorating.
I am glad he went ahead and put up everything. I think I would have broke down anyway.

One of my friends has family members who are Russian Orthodox. They have actually taken trees off the treelawn that were put out for the rubbish, taken them home and put them up, since their Christmas is January 7.

A couple years back I started not putting up a real tree until Christmas Eve…I call it a “Happy Days Christmas” (remember the show). The trees are cheap…not more than $5 tops. Plus, my house is little, a tree takes up too much space!

We usually take them down the weekend after Epiphany. I always want to keep up the Nativity until Feb 2, but by the time everything else comes down, I usually just put that away too.
I wish we would wait longer to put up the decorations. Those usually go up right after Thanksgiving. I can’t get DH to change on that one. It makes me mad when we don’t even want to listen to the Christmas music after the 26th or so.
This year will be a little different. DH is only going to be home for 3 weeks (coming in 2:dancing
. DD and I are going to do everything but the Christmas tree and the outside lights (except maybe the ones that just spread out on the bushes. He will be leaving the weekend after Christmas day so the tree will come down prior to that. (I took down the tree by myself when he was in Afghanistan–won’t be attempting that again!
) I’ll take care of the rest at the usual time.

I usually travel for the holidays, so I don’t do a lot of decorating. However, I’m stuck here this year. I don’t have enough room for a tree but might get a tabletop ceramic tree with the little colored plastic thingies for the lights.

I’d favor leaving things up through Epiphany, that’s how we’ve usually done things. However, I hadn’t heard of leaving things up through Candlemas.
Now, pardon my ignorance, I should know this, but what is Candlemas and if it isn’t obvious, please explain how it’s a part of the Christmas season. Thanks in advance for the info!

The Christmas tree goes up the first Sunday of advent but we do not decorate it or plug on the lights (the lights are woven in). We do drape purple and pink ribbon around it (modeling after the advent wreath). Visitors comment about the ribbons only and it gives us the opportunity to explain that Advent is for preparation, Christmas doesn’t begin until Christmas.
On Christmas eve we decorate the tree before midnight mass and turn the lights on when we leave for church.
The Christmas decorations stay up until after Epiphany, then we just keep the snowmen/winter decorations up until the last snow.

I usually begin decorating our home for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving–and my toddler follows me around taking the decorations down as I put them up. That toddler “un-decking” of our halls continues throughout the Advent and Christmas season until I put everything away right after Epiphany.
Ooo! I like it! We usually put up our tree and decorate it at the start of Advent, but I usually have to re-decorate the tree repeatedly. The ornaments on the lower half mysteriously disappear or get re-arranged.

Decorations usually don’t go up before Dec. 20 and come down Jan. 2 before I return to work.
This year DS and DD & her husband of a year will be home for Christmas. We’ll miss the other son who can’t be with us.

I chose Jan 2nd…I told my husband tonight, that we should just carry the tree with all the lights, decorations, etc…into another room once Christmas is over…and just put a blanket over it or something. Then, we can just whip it out the following year. I’m bad I know…lol I love decorating the tree–it’s assembling it that is a pain.

As kids, we always waited until after Jan. 6, Epiphany – and so I continue that tradition with my own family – I rather enjoy the beauty of the holiday season afer all the rushing frenzy dies down and there is no more to do but reflect on the recently past year and pray for hope in the New Year. My husband, toddler daughter and I like to spend time in our living room sitting on the couch and gazing at the tree. Our Nativity scene is on the coffee table and our daughter enjoys moving the “dolls” around in the stable. Every day, we tell her to put baby Jesus under the angel’s light. She loves to do it.

One of my brother’s birthdays is on Dec 16 so that is when we put it all up and my other brother’s birthday is on Jan 26 so that is when we take it all down unless the tree turns too brown then we take it down then.
PS: We ALWAYS get a real tree it just isn’t Christmas with out that pine smell and without my mom yelling “Catch the lights on the other side!”
or my dad “Don’t drop that I got it in Switzerland when you were 2!”
It is a blast! My sister blasts carols and a couple of us are fighting playfully over who gets to set up the Fontanini Christmas scene. Oh, the joys of living in a family of 8! We all love to argue even over silly things it is fun!)

We put up our tree last Saturday and it will come down on December 26th. I will though, keep the Nativity out (it’s been out since the beginning of Advent) until the Epiphany. My MIL’s birthday is 12/18, and the weekend before we go out for breakfast as a family and then go back to her house to decorate their tree. Then we come home and do ours, but it’s always come down the day after. We love Christmas, but after it’s over, we just take it all down and pack it up for next year.
