When does a doubtful sin bother you?

I’m asking to see how strict or lenient I should be w/ my conscience.

What criteria makes a doubtful sin a bothersome and doubtful one to you?

To me, mortal sin is not something I would be doubtful about. We know when commit a mortal sin. So if I think I’ve sinned, and I’m doubtful as to what it was I did or how I did it… it’s probably venial. Mortal requires full consent. It’s not something you do lightly, or on accident.

Given this definition then, I would say that it would bother me when it appears that I was so, “out of control”, that I am unable to distinguish between good thoughts and behaviors and bad thoughts and behaviors.

I can think of of only two basic situations where this might happen.
One case is where the sin is in the distant past. This actually happened to me when I was returning to the Church after many years. In this case I confessed my general attitudes using the “seven deadly sins” as my examination of conscience.
The other case would require that I become so intoxicated that I cannot recall specifics. This is not likely to occur.

Bottom line this this. There should rarely ever be a circumstance where one is “doubtful” or “not sure” if they sinned.
