At a recent bible study the question arose as to when a human being receives a soul. Some made reference to St Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. (both thought many days after conception and even that males received their souls before females) If the Catholic Church teaches that life begins at the moment of conception, wouldn’t it stand to reason that that life would also receive its soul at the moment of conception? Are there church documents that I could use for reference?

Hi,

Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas were limited by the very primitive understanding of living organisms that prevailed at the time. Today the Church teaches that the soul is the principal of life. There can be no human life without the soul. The moment there is life, there is a soul. (Denzinger 1185)
