When does a near occasion become a mortal sin?

I am ready to go to Mass tonight, but something popped into my head today that makes me doubt whether I should receive Communion. I didn’t think it was a mortal sin at the time, but a few days ago I was searching for something on Google images. I wasn’t searching for anything bad, but I knew that there might be some pornographic results, and without thinking about it much, I turned off safe search because a small part of me wanted to see something. Well, sure enough some pornographic images came up, and when they did I hesitated for a few seconds, but then I quickly closed out because I didn’t want to offend God.

I didn’t think much of it at the time because I didn’t believe I committed a mortal sin. Although I did intentionally turn off safe search with the desire to see something bad, I didn’t reflect on what I was doing, and when it came down to it I decided not to commit the sin. However, now I’m wondering if I DID commit a mortal sin. 😦

I am going to confess this as soon as I can whether it’s mortal or not, but I want to know if I should receive Communion tonight.

It popped into your head that means your conscience, guardian angel or even God is warning you!
Small part of you wanted to see something (temptation) you yielded to it and you knew that some pornographic images might come up (proximate danger). This is willful exposure to sin, willful desire to see something bad, willful hesitation. I think you committed a mortal sin although it might be already forgiven because you are sorry you offended God (supreme sorrow out of love). None the less, confession is a must, and I would recommend not receiving the Holy Eucharist!

Thanks. I don’t trust my judgment on this, so I will refrain from receiving. 😦
