Hi, I was wondering, in your opinions, when does drinking alcohol become a sin? Does the Catechism have anything in depth on this subject? I personally love having a nice, ice cold beer or two at the end of a long day. At what point does this turn sinful? When does the frequency of how often you drink become sinful?

Reason is a gift from God. Imbibing alcohol to the point where you’re bereft of reason would be when it becomes sinful, I’d think.

Taking the edge off with a couple cold ones after a day’s work is one thing. Intoxication is another.

I think the reasonable amount of alcohol suggested is around 10 servings per week. The Catechism lays out general principles, as for the rest, you need to use your reason and best judgement. Do you feel addicted to the stuff? Occasionally, I’ll have an ice cold Coors Lite after work, but then I can be weeks, months even without having a drop of alcohol, and not feeling deprived or frustrated. If the same could be true of sex…(sigh)

I think it becomes a sin when it is problematic. If one blacks out, even if it’s once a year or uses it for beer when the money is needed for something else, then it’s a sin.

If it affects one’s ability to reason, it’s a sin in my opinion.

As to what’s too much, if someone is truly an alcoholic, even ONE drink is too much, because it starts down that slope of no return.

It depends on one’s height, weight ,metabolism and a bunch of other factors.

If it is causing problems in any way, economically, with work, in relationships, with health, with the law, with memory or reasoning, it’s a problem.

If one has to ask if and when it’s a problem, then it probably is already to that point.

People with problems with alcohol are usually the last ones to realize it. Generally, everyone around can see it and is telling them it’s too much.

Here’s the link for AA.

It’s not so much the quantity as what it does to a person. If a person drinks once a year, can’t control himself, then it’s still too much.

I think it becomes sinful when it harms oneself or others, especially, in any way.

On the other hand, there are those of us in possession of relatives who freak out about alcohol for no good reason. My parents are still quite uneasy with the idea of alcohol in moderation.

I would have to disagree with you there. I’m asking when this becomes a sin. Does that mean I have a problem with drinking? I think the link for AA was unnecessary as well. I was inquiring as to when consuming alcohol becomes a sin, not saying I have a problem and
can’t quit? In my humble opinion, I believe alcohol becomes a sin when you stop controlling it and it starts controlling you.

When your love for something goes against reason and becomes inordinate then it becomes sinful. Then it can cause damage to the soul and body, and even to others. When you drink moderately there should be no sin involved. God bless you.
