When does despair become a mortal sin? What if you are despaired due a medical condition like depression, is it still a sin then? Thanks for your help.

If you have a medical condition that causes your despair, then it is not a mortal sin.

The kind of despair that is a mortal sin is when you simply believe your sin is too big for God to forgive so you simply decide not to humbly approach His Mercy and Love. It can also be when you decide to abandon all faith in Him when the going gets rough because you think His way of sanctifying you is not what you would have wanted.

The sin of despair does not have a whole lot to do with health, work, hunger, etc. It is aimed more at the belief that you cannot be forgiven your sins and give up on trying to be a faithful person. Deciding perhaps to sin in every way you can because you have lost all hope of salvation and will go to hell no matter what. Some people actually have said that that is what they believe. As long as you can breath it is never to late with God. Hold on to that hope and you will not commit the sin of despair.
